May continued 2021’s trend of being a very good year for metal. As is now usual, restricting the list to just a handful of releases was difficult. There’s more where this came from! Continue reading “Monthly Overview – the Best of May 2021”

Boss Keloid – Family the Smiling Thrush (Review)
Boss Keloid are a progressive sludge metal band from the UK and this is their fifth album.
Family the Smiling Thrush contains 47 minutes of new material from the ever-welcome Boss Keloid. A shining light in the UK’s heavy music scene, I’ve enjoyed watching their development from 2016’s Herb Your Enthusiasm to 2018’s Melted on the Inch. Now they’ve Continue reading “Boss Keloid – Family the Smiling Thrush (Review)”
Impure Wilhelmina – Antidote (Review)
This is the seventh album from Impure Wilhelmina, a Swiss post-metal band.
The music takes progressive post-metal/rock, post-hardcore, and indie/alt-rock, throws in a healthy amount of goth influences, and even has a blackened veneer in places. Continue reading “Impure Wilhelmina – Antidote (Review)”
Dordeduh – Har (Review)
This is the second album from Dordeduh, a progressive metal band from Romania.
Featuring current/ex-members of Argus Megere/Negură Bunget, Har treats the listener to 62 minutes of blackened progressive metal. Continue reading “Dordeduh – Har (Review)”
Psychonaut/Sâver – Emerald – Split (Review)
This is a split between post-metal bands Psychonaut from Belgium and Sâver, (who also feature members of Hymn), from Norway.
Psychonaut start the split with the 16-minute The Great Realisation. Continue reading “Psychonaut/Sâver – Emerald – Split (Review)”
Vokonis – Odyssey (Review)
This is the fourth album from Vokonis, a progressive doom metal band from Sweden.
Vokonis’ style mixes together progressive metal with stoner and doom metal, resulting in a colourful and enjoyable collection of tracks. While Mastodon is the obvious reference point, it’s also an inadequate one for Odyssey, as there’s a lot more at play here than simply Mastodon worship. I can also hear elements of bands as diverse as Sleep, Slomatics, Elder, Perihelion Ship, Rush, Khemmis, Alice in Chains, Witchkiss, Monolord, and Black Crown Initiate, to name but a few. Continue reading “Vokonis – Odyssey (Review)”
Corr Mhóna – Abhainn (Review)
This is the second album from Irish black metal band Corr Mhóna.
Abhainn is a 56-minute progressive black metal album that also contains a healthy amount of doom and folk influences. It’s ambitious and bold, but also very striking and well-realised. The band have clearly put a lot into this work, and it shows; Abhainn is Continue reading “Corr Mhóna – Abhainn (Review)”
The Lion’s Daughter – Skin Show (Review)
This is the fourth album from US progressive sludge metallers The Lion’s Daughter.
The follow up to 2018’s striking Future Cult, Skin Show contains 42 minutes of individually-crafted metal. The music on Skin Show can best be described as that of a sludge metal band merged with 70s progressive Continue reading “The Lion’s Daughter – Skin Show (Review)”
Soothsayer – Echoes of the Earth (Review)
This is the debut album from Irish doom/sludge band Soothsayer.
Ever since thoroughly enjoying 2016’s At This Great Depth, I’ve been looking forward to something more substantial from Soothsayer. And now it’s here in the form of Echoes of the Earth – 52 minutes of atmospheric doom sludge metal. Continue reading “Soothsayer – Echoes of the Earth (Review)”
Termina – Dysphoria (Review)
Termina is the collaborative debut album between solo artist Nik Nocturnal, and Andy Cizek, singer of Monuments.
Termina’s music is best described as modern metal – a mix of genres and styles such as progressive metal, technical metal, djent, deathcore, and metalcore. Continue reading “Termina – Dysphoria (Review)”
