While August was a slower month than some others have been this year for first class metal albums, it was still home to more than enough top releases to warrant this list. Continue reading “Monthly Overview – the Best of August 2021”

Hooded Menace – The Tritonus Bell (Review)
This is the sixth album from Finnish death/doom band Hooded Menace.
Following on from 2015’s Darkness Drips Forth and 2018’s Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed, The Tritonus Bell is another gruesome slab of death/doom, only this time it has been infused with a greater amount of classic heavy metal influences. Continue reading “Hooded Menace – The Tritonus Bell (Review)”
Veil of Conspiracy – Echoes of Winter (Review)
Veil of Conspiracy are a melodic metal band from Italy and this is their second album.
The promo blurb states that the 45 minutes of material on Echoes of Winter is for fans of Katatonia, Opeth, and The Morningside, which is a good starting point for Veil of Conspiracy’s sound. I’d also add that fans of bands such as Amorphis, Paradise Lost, Deathwhite, Moonspell, My Dying Bride, and Anathema will find much to like here. The Slow Death – Siege (Review)
This is the fourth album from Australian death/doom band The Slow Death.
The Slow Death contain current and ex-members of bands such as Illimitable Dolor and Temple Nightside. On Siege, we are given 63 minutes of crushing death/doom metal, which also contains elements of Gothic metal and funeral doom. Featuring four colossal songs, this is a dark and gloomy trip into a world of multifaceted misery and woe. Continue reading “The Slow Death – Siege (Review)”

Borboropsis – Decorticated Burial of Delirium (Review)
This is the debut EP from US death/doom metal band Borboropsis.
This release offers up 24 minutes of atmospheric heaviness that holds a lot of promise for the future. The music combines cavernous old-school death metal with mood-focused slabs of doom, and it does this Continue reading “Borboropsis – Decorticated Burial of Delirium (Review)”
Wasteland Coven/Nothing Is Real – Turmoil – Split (Review)
Wasteland Coven and Nothing Is Real are both doom metal bands from the US, and they have teamed up for this split.
We’ve met Wasteland Coven previously on their very good debut EP Ruined. On this split they offer up three new tracks lasting 19 minutes. Continue reading “Wasteland Coven/Nothing Is Real – Turmoil – Split (Review)”

Lucifer’s Fall – III – From the Deep (Review)
This is the third album from Australian doom metallers Lucifer’s Fall.
I’m a sucker for Lucifer’s Fall. Whatever they do seems like filthy doom gold as far as I’m concerned. If you haven’t already, make sure you also check out their past releases, (Lucifer’s Fall, Fuck You We’re Lucifer’s Fall, II – Cursed & Damned, Tales from the Crypt), as every single one of them is worth it. Continue reading “Lucifer’s Fall – III – From the Deep (Review)”
Fimir – Tomb of God (Review)
This is the debut album from Finnish doom metal band Fimir.
Fimir play traditional doom metal with a modern edge and a somewhat cosmic feel in places. Continue reading “Fimir – Tomb of God (Review)”
