Experior Obscura – Iter in Nebula (Review)

Experior Obscura - Iter in NebulaThis is the debut album from Experior Obscura, a one man, (and session drummer), Italian black metal act.

Apparently this is a reworked, remastered, and generally revisited and updated version of a 2015 demo. I haven’t heard the original to comment on the differences, but this version of Iter in Nebula sounds good, both musically and production-wise. Distant – Tyrannotophia (Review)

Distant - TyrannotophiaThis is the debut album from Distant, a deathcore band from the Netherlands.

Tyrannotophia combines underground slam-infused death metal with brutal deathcore. It’s easy to be lazy with this sort of thing and end up with a generic record, but Tyrannotophia is definitely an above-standard release. Continue reading “Distant – Tyrannotophia (Review)”

Everest Queen – Dead Eden (Review)

Everest Queen - Dead EdenThis is the debut album from Everest Queen, a sludge metal band from the UK.

Having enjoyed 2016’s self titled debut EP it’s good to have a full length from the band now. This is progressive sludge metal, with an imposing presence and plenty of riffs. The band’s promo blurb states that this is for fans of High on Fire, Om, Mastodon, and Isis, and it’s hard to disagree. Continue reading “Everest Queen – Dead Eden (Review)”

Gods Forsaken - Smells of DeathGods Forsaken are a death metal supergroup and this is their second album.

This is the follow up to the band’s 2017 debut album In a Pitch Black Grave, and it shows that Gods Forsaken have lost none of their talent for butchery. Continue reading “Gods Forsaken – Smells of Death (Review)”

Chalice of Suffering – Lost Eternally (Review)

Chalice of Suffering - Lost EternallyThis is the second album from US funeral doom band Chalice of Suffering.

2016’s For You I Die was an album I enjoyed, so it’s very agreeable to have a new slab of torment from the band. And what a considerable slab of torment and suffering it is too. Continue reading “Chalice of Suffering – Lost Eternally (Review)”

Mephorash – Shem Ha Mephorash (Review)

Mephorash - Shem Ha MephorashThis is the fourth album from Swedish black metallers Mephorash.

Even after enjoying 2015’s 1557 – Rites of Nullification and getting a taste of the band’s new material on last year’s The Third Woe, I still wasn’t really prepared for this. Shem Ha Mephorash might surprise you by just how good it is, as it did me. Mephorash may not be a well-worn Continue reading “Mephorash – Shem Ha Mephorash (Review)”

Druids – Monument (Review)

Druids - MonumentThis is the latest album from US stoner metal band Druids.

After enjoying 2016’s Cycles of Mobeum and 2017’s Spirit Compass, I’m glad to be able to catch up with Druids once more. Continue reading “Druids – Monument (Review)”
