This is the debut album by Sacred Noose, a black/death metal band from Northern Ireland.
Vanishing Spires offers up a 31-minute concoction of poisonous black, death, and doom metal, all poured into a think tar-like substance of misery, pestilence, and woe. Sacred Noose are like a shroud of horror and violence hiding a deeper malevolence that just wants everything to decay and wither away.
Necronos are a Mexican death metal band and this is their debut album.
Charred Tongue is a 33-minute death metal album bursting with chaotic aggression that’s been tempered by a keen sense of worldbuilding. Mixing atmospheric, progressive, technical, and dissonant death metal together with skilled ability, Necronos have crafted an album that showcases their talents well. Yes, it’s list season once more, so gather round and witness some of the best metal that 2024 had to offer!
2024 was a fantastic year for metal, and that’s an understatement. I thought 2023 was one of the weaker years for metal releases, overall. As such, putting last year’s list together, although challenging as it always is, was relatively effortless compared to this one. I don’t think I’ve agonised over placings more any other year. Essentially a side band of the gloriously nasty Golgothan Remains, (three out of four members have links to the band), Sarcophagum also boast the talents of the drummer of the mighty Ashen Horde, (also current/ex-member of Blade of Horus, Decrepid, Evilyn, Norse, Somnium Nox, Virulent Depravity, and more). Veilburner are a black/death metal band from the US and this is their seventh album.
A new Veilburner album is always an exciting prospect. I’ve been a fan since 2016’s The Obscene Rite, but it was 2022’s VLBRNR that really saw them reach their true potential in my eyes. Now we have The Duality of Decapitation and Wisdom‘s 49 minutes upon us, and I’m ready to fall into Veilburner’s well-realised world once more. And, this time, it’s stranger than ever. This is the third album from German extreme metal band Ingurgitating Oblivion.
It’s been some time since Ingurgitating Oblivion terrified the world with their malignant presence. 2014’s Continuum of Absence showed great promise, which was then realised on 2017’s colossal Vision Wallows in Symphonies of Light. The wait is now over, for Ontology of Nought brings us a massive 73 minutes of darkness. It’s time to step into the nightmare once more. This is the fifth album from Pyrrhon, an extreme metal band from the US.
Whatever you want to call it – progressive, dissonant, experimental, avant-garde, etc. – Pyrrhon are not your average band. Their music is atypical and envelope-pushing, while retaining enough death metal sinew amidst the jazz and hardcore influences to propel their extreme metal output forward with creative intensity.
