There was an unreasonably unreasonable (?) amount of good music to be had in September. So check out the below and let me know your favourite, (it goes without saying you should also be listening to The Ocean and Oceans of Slumber, so I won’t mention those again). Continue reading “Monthly Overview – the Best of September 2020”

Svalbard – When I Die, Will I Get Better? (Review)
Svalbard are a crust/hardcore band from the UK and this is their third album.
The follow up to 2018’s It’s Hard to Have Hope, I was not expecting just how good When I Die, Will I Get Better? is.
This is an album where Continue reading “Svalbard – When I Die, Will I Get Better? (Review)”
Grid – Livsleda (Review)
This is the debut album from Swedish grindcore band Grid.
I do like me some Swedish grind. Grid play merciless grindcore, with fiery blasts, punishing d-beats, and melodic crust all included in their aggressive formula. I very much liked 2017’s Human Collapse Syndrome, so I had high hopes for Livsleda, and it has not disappointed. Continue reading “Grid – Livsleda (Review)”
Henry Kane – Age of the Idiot (Review)
Henry Kane is a one-man deathgrind/crust band from Sweden, and this is his second album.
I do enjoy Henry Kane’s work. If you haven’t already, make sure you check out Den Förstörda Människans Rike and the split with Prolefeed. Brought to us by the man-of-a-million-bands Jonny Pettersson, (Ashcloud, Gods Forsaken, Heads for the Dead, Just Before Dawn, Ursinne, Wombbath, and many others), Age of the Idiot is a brutally sublime piece of extremity. Continue reading “Henry Kane – Age of the Idiot (Review)”
Body Void/Keeper – Split (Review)
Body Void and Keeper are both US doom/sludge bands, and they have teamed up to deliver this split.
Both Body Void, (I Live Inside a Burning House/You Will Know the Fear You Forced upon Us), and Keeper, (Split with Sea Bastard/The Space Between Your Teeth/Split with Old Witch), have Continue reading “Body Void/Keeper – Split (Review)”
Thicko – The Beginning Is Nigh (Review)
This is the debut release from Thicko, a UK hardcore band.
From the capable hands of Paul Catten and Paul Kenney, (Fukpig, Kroh), The Beginning Is Nigh contains a scant 9 minutes of bludgeoning. Continue reading “Thicko – The Beginning Is Nigh (Review)”
Coilguns – Watchwinders (Review)
Coilguns are a hardcore band from Switzerland and this is their third album.
It doesn’t seem that long ago since 2018’s Millennials burst onto the scene, and I suppose it wasn’t, really. However, already Coilguns, (boasting ex-members of The Ocean) are back with a new 41 minutes of unusual hardcore punk, (as well as some rather striking album art). Continue reading “Coilguns – Watchwinders (Review)”
Geist – Swarming Season (Review)
This is the debut album from Geist, a hardcore band from the UK.
Mixing dark hardcore, metal, and crust, this is 26 minutes of near-lightless harshness. Continue reading “Geist – Swarming Season (Review)”
Bones – Diseased (Review)
This is the third album from US crusty death metallers Bones.
Sons of Sleaze came out in 2013 and made a mess. Featuring current and ex-members of Usurper, the band clearly had the filthy talents, and now they’re back to make an even bigger mess of things with Diseased. Continue reading “Bones – Diseased (Review)”
Kludde – In de Kwelm (Review)
Kludde are a Belgian black metal band and this is their second album.
Inspired by second wave black metal, this is old-school, raw, and menacing. A death metal influence can be heard in the music, giving it more muscle and thickness than some black metal out there. Pinches of crust’s energetic urgency can be detected too here and there, propelling a particular passage along at a punishing rate. There’s even a doom/sludge influence; this mainly Continue reading “Kludde – In de Kwelm (Review)”
