Phew. After the metallic overload of the past couple of months, June was a bit calmer. Having said that, I have a great selection of releases for you to salivate over, and I still had to cut a few for the sake of brevity that are definitely worthy of inclusion. Anyway, it’s on with the show! Continue reading “Monthly Overview – the Best of June 2019”

Hex – God Has No Name (Review)
Hex are a Spanish death/doom metal band and this is their second album.
Hex are a band that play a base of death metal that’s been infused with doom. It is, in general terms at least, a mix of old-school bands such as Paradise Lost, Bolt Thrower, Behemoth, Hypocrisy, and Dismember, with a few others thrown in too. Continue reading “Hex – God Has No Name (Review)”
Inert – Vermin (Review)
This is the debut album from Inert, an international, (Swedish/Spanish), death metal band.
Following on from the enjoyable Obliteration of the Self, with its homage to classic old-school Swedish death metal, Inert return with Vermin as a changed beast; two new band members, and an expanded set of influences. Continue reading “Inert – Vermin (Review)”
Keitzer – Where the Light Ends (Review)
Keitzer are a German death metal/grindcore band and this is their seventh album.
Keitzer’s 2014 album The Last Defence was a particular favourite of mine, with its energetic and well-delivered deathgrind really hitting the spot. Unknown Artist – A Pig’s Head on a Stick (Review)
This is the debut release from Unknown Artist, a French extreme metal band.
What on earth is this unholy abomination? A single 28-minute track of utter nastiness and horror, that’s what. Complex and impenetrable, this is disjointed, inaccessible blackened death metal, and is not for the weak of heart. Continue reading “Unknown Artist – A Pig’s Head on a Stick (Review)”
Itheist – Itheist (Review)
Itheist are a UK black/death metal band and this is their debut album.
Previously named Aetherium Mors, this is the band’s first release under its new moniker. This is modern, dissonant black metal that’s been hybridised with death metal and energised with melodic darkness. Continue reading “Itheist – Itheist (Review)”

The Odious – Vesica Piscis (Review)
The Odious are a progressive metal band from the US and this is their second album.
The Odious’ progressive metal is a mix of modern technical/progressive/death metal and progressive rock. The end result can be loosely characterised as a mix of The Faceless, Opeth, Between the Buried and Me, Sikth, Meshuggah, Ulcerate, and Devin Townsend. Continue reading “The Odious – Vesica Piscis (Review)”
Organectomy – Existential Disconnect (Review)
Organectomy are a New Zealand death metal band and this is their second album.
2017’s Domain of the Wretched arrived with a bang, a whirlwind of spine-ripping aggression, and a surprisingly well-rounded offer. Continue reading “Organectomy – Existential Disconnect (Review)”
Temple Koludra – Seven! Sirens! To a Lost Archetype (Review)
This is the debut album from Temple Koludra, a German black metal band.
Temple Koludra’s music uses black and death metal to craft a grim, raw exploration of Indian cultures and influences via extreme metal’s embracing framework. Continue reading “Temple Koludra – Seven! Sirens! To a Lost Archetype (Review)”
