This is the third album from UK solo artist AA Williams.
Playing an engaging form of dark alternative rock tastefully laced with post-rock flavours, (and a touch of post-metal influences here and there), Solstice contains 58 minutes of charismatic material. A.A. Williams has crafted a record that’s immersive and engaging.
Solstice is filled with songs that showcase A.A. Williams’ strongest and most distinctive material. It follows on naturally from 2022’s As the Moon Rests, building naturally upon that record’s strengths. Her musical capability and singing voice are as one, ensuring that Solstice succeeds in its well-rounded, comprehensive vision. Her voice is clear and subtly powerful throughout these compelling songs. Her singing carries a character that’s increasingly impressive. It’s both delicate and potent.
Despite this, the rest of the music shouldn’t be discounted as mere window dressing. The songs are well-written, leaning into their strengths, providing a rich backdrop that exists with a presence in its own right. Sometimes understated, sometimes the focal point, always with a quality of its own, the instruments work closely with A.A. Williams’ vocals to become a work greater than the some of its parts
This is a record of intimate cinematic breadth and immersive atmospheric depth. The dark moods are thick and luxurious, with evocative textures that you can almost reach out and touch.
A.A. Williams has crafted a compelling collection of tracks in Solstice. Gradually building in potency as you get to know them, the songs expand and contract as the album unfolds, breathing with emotion-rich life. It’s an absorbing experience, and also a very enjoyable one.
Very highly recommended.
