Nordicwinter is a one-man Canadian black metal band, and this is his third album.
Containing 36 minutes of atmospheric black metal with a depressive-style edge, Desolation is an obscure underground gem, one which should be uncovered by as many people as possible. I’m a big fan of atmospheric black metal, and Desolation is a particularly good example of the art. Continue reading “Nordicwinter – Desolation (Review)”
This is the debut album from Invernoir, an Italian doom metal band.
Taking influence from old-school doom/Gothic metal via the likes of My Dying Bride, Anathema, Katatonia, and Paradise Lost, The Void and the Unbearable Loss contains 51 minutes of music crafted in this venerable style. Continue reading “Invernoir – The Void and the Unbearable Loss (Review)”
Aphonic Threnody are an international funeral doom band, and this is their third album.
Having enjoyed 2017’s Of Loss and Grief, and knowing that the band features members of Arrant Saudade, Towards Atlantis Lights, and Dea Marica, as soon as I saw The Great Hatred appear I knew I had to spend some time absorbing its dark doomy delights. Continue reading “Aphonic Threnody – The Great Hatred (Review)”
Bihargam are a black metal band from the US and this is their second album.
Featuring members of the mighty Fornicus, and playing the sort of moreish melodic black metal that hits the spot nicely, enjoying Ove Tenebrae was pretty much a given. Continue reading “Bihargam – Ove Tenebrae (Review)”
Wayfarer are a US black metal band and this is their fourth album.
Wayfarer are shaping up to be one of my favourite black metal entities of the last six years or so. The quality levels of 2014’s Children of the Iron Age, 2016’s Old Souls, and 2018’s World’s Blood have made for an enviable Continue reading “Wayfarer – A Romance with Violence (Review)”
This is the second album from US black metal band Lord Almighty.
Lord Almighty play a modern brand of progressive black metal that incorporates elements of blackened thrash, sludge, crust, and rock into its vibrant embrace. The press blurb invokes bands such as Darkthrone, Kvelertak, Thin Lizzy, Mastodon, Continue reading “Lord Almighty – Wither (Review)”
Bleedskin are a Belgian death metal band and this is their debut album.
Bleedskin say they’re inspired by bands such as Cannibal Corpse, Abnormality, Behemoth, Dying Fetus, Benighted, and the like, and I’d certainly recommend Blood Reign for fans of these acts. Bleedskin’s songs are well-written, well-produced, and professionally delivered. Continue reading “Bleedskin – Blood Reign (Review)”
Among Phantoms are a hardcore band from Denmark and this is their debut album.
This is a modern brand of hardcore, with elements of metalcore that can be heard, alongside a healthy rock influence. Continue reading “Among Phantoms – Memories/Catastrophes (Review)”
In Cauda Venenum are a French post-black metal band and this is their second album.
Much like In Cauda Venenum’s self-titled debut album, G.O.H.E. contains just two tracks, but each is over 20 minutes in length. Continue reading “In Cauda Venenum – G.O.H.E. (Review)”
This is the third album form French black metallers Dysylumn.
If you find 81-minute albums intimidating, then look away now; Cosmogonie is exactly one such beast. This massive album is divided into three main parts, and then added to by an intro, interlude, and outro, ( all of which are dark ambient affairs). Each of the parts has its own feel and themes, and each is resplendent with quality of delivery and performance. Continue reading “Dysylumn – Cosmogonie (Review)”
