It’s Damnation o-clock once more! This is always such a good festival to attend. The line up is an interesting and varied one, with some bands I’m less interested in, some that are an essential experience, and some frustrating clashes. I missed some great bands today, unfortunately, but that’s always going to be the case with such a jam-packed festival. Thronehammer – Kingslayer (Review)
Thronehammer are an international doom metal band and this is their third album.
Thronehammer’s 2021 album Incantation Rites was an absolutely colossal gem of an album that almost made it to the very top of my year end list. As such, it’s with some trepidation that I approached Kingslayer, as the previous record casts a long shadow. Continue reading “Thronehammer – Kingslayer (Review)”
Cardinals Folly – Live by the Sword (Review)
Cardinals Folly are a Finnish doom metal band and this is their sixth album.
It’s always a treat to hear some new music by Cardinals Folly. Live by the Sword boasts 41 minutes of the band’s charismatic doom metal. Cardinals Folly have established themselves as a quality act over the years, so there’s nothing to do when a new release appears but to buckle up and prepare for the ride. Continue reading “Cardinals Folly – Live by the Sword (Review)”
Primordial – How It Ends (Review)
Primordial are an Irish metal band and this is their tenth album.
Primordial are a reliably enjoyable band that found a voice of their own early on in their career. They have some top quality albums, the most recent of which was 2018’s Exile Amongst the Ruins. Playing a blackened form of heavy metal and doom, new album How It Ends delivers 66 minutes of Primordial’s inimitable material. Continue reading “Primordial – How It Ends (Review)”
Aortha – Monolit (Review)
Aortha is a metal project based in Norway, and this is their debut album.
To best explain who/what Aortha is, let’s turn to the promo blurb – “AORTHA is new metal project/band founded by Predrag Glogovac . He was guitar player from known metal band in ex.Yugoslavia called MONOLIT which was active from 1988-1992 until war broke in country and band ceased to exist. Reunion in 2006-2008 and one fine album released on One Records from Belgrade «Arcana Balkanica» in 2008. Predrag has played in Norway with some known metal musicians for years. In 2020 with a lot of unreleased music and songs he started to gather old friends & musicians for project and album you have in hand is born.” Continue reading “Aortha – Monolit (Review)”
Demoniac – Nube Negra (Review)
This is the third album from thrash metal band Demoniac, from Chile.
Demoniac are back with more ripping thrash that’s memorably enriched with non-standard ideas and songwriting, as well as clarinet, Moog, and accordion. The band’s idiosyncratic style was very nicely demonstrated on 2021’s So It Goes, and on Nube Negra they spend 42 minutes showcasing their individual style once more. Continue reading “Demoniac – Nube Negra (Review)”
Spirit Adrift – Ghost at the Gallows (Review)
This is the fifth album from the US heavy metal band Spirit Adrift.
I’ve always enjoyed what Spirit Adrift offer, (check out Chained to Oblivion, Curse of Conception, Divided by Darkness, and Enlightened in Eternity), so new album Ghost at the Gallows is most welcome. Continue reading “Spirit Adrift – Ghost at the Gallows (Review)”
Horrendous – Ontological Mysterium (Review)
This is the fifth album from US death metallers Horrendous.
Horrendous’ trajectory through their last three albums – 2014’s Ecdysis, 2015’s Anareta, and 2018’s Idol – has been an enjoyable one to experience, but it’s been a while since we’ve heard from them. As such, it’s great to finally have Ontological Mysterium, which contains 38 minutes of new material. Continue reading “Horrendous – Ontological Mysterium (Review)”
Shadow Legion – Shadow Legion (Review)
This is the debut album from Shadow Legion, a progressive extreme metal band from the US.
Shadow Legion contains 68 minutes of music, and is brought to us by current/ex-members of bands such as Diabolic, Gigan, Hate Eternal, and Pyrrhon, among others. Continue reading “Shadow Legion – Shadow Legion (Review)”
Eleine – We Shall Remain (Review)
Eleine are a Swedish symphonic metal band and this is their fourth album.
This is my first encounter with Eleine, and it’s a very favourable one. Playing a form of symphonic heavy metal with a distinctly high quality flavour and more metallic might than you might expect, We Shall Remain delivers 37 minutes of engaging music. Continue reading “Eleine – We Shall Remain (Review)”
