December is always a tricky month, as generally the releases slow down in the run up to the new year. That doesn’t mean there were no notable releases during this time, however. Check out the outstanding metal albums below and let me know which your favourite is… Continue reading “Monthly Overview – the Best of December 2018”

Wonderbox Metal End of Year List – Best Metal of 2018
Having considered it long and hard, I’ve decided that any form of introductory paragraph with any real substance would simply detract from the list below. As such, all I’ll say is that 2018, like every year, has given us some top quality metal releases. So have a look at my top picks for 2018, and hopefully you’ll find a new band to obsess over…

Lucifer’s Fall – Tales from the Crypt (Review)
Lucifer’s Fall are an Australian doom metal band and this is their latest release. It’s an oddball collection of rarities – live tracks, rehearsals, covers, splits, demos, etc. – 62 minutes of raucous, rocking doom metal. Sorry, DOOM METAL!
I can’t help but really like Lucifer’s Fall. They’ve got songs, they’ve got attitude, and they’ve got balls. What’s not to like? Continue reading “Lucifer’s Fall – Tales from the Crypt (Review)”
Of Spire & Throne – Penance (Review)
This is the second album from Of Spire and Throne, a doom/sludge band from the UK.
Now here’s a band I really enjoy the work of, (Toll of the Wound, Sanctum in the Light), so it’s great to have them back. Continue reading “Of Spire & Throne – Penance (Review)”
Majestic Downfall – Waters of Fate (Review)
This is the fifth album from Majestic Downfall, a Mexican death/doom band.
Having enjoyed very much Majestic Downfall’s 2014 split with The Slow Death, a new album of 52-minute duration is well-received. Continue reading “Majestic Downfall – Waters of Fate (Review)”
Monthly Overview – the Best of November 2018
November was a strong month for metal. Both death metal and doom are well-represented below, but as we’ll see more than just those two genres produced some great records in the past month. November saw a strong showcase for UK talent too, as five of the below bands are all from this country. Continue reading “Monthly Overview – the Best of November 2018”
Bast – Nanoångström (Review)
This is the second album from UK blackened sludge/doom band Bast.
This is a colossal, sprawling slab of doom that lasts 58 minutes and is divided into an intro track and five mammoth songs. Continue reading “Bast – Nanoångström (Review)”
Echtra – BardO (Review)
Echtra is a one man black metal/drone band, and this is his fourth album.
All Echtra songs clock in at 23 minutes, and BardO contains two of them. Across these sprawling tracks depth and texture is achieved through a variety of instruments that are used in conjunction with each other to create a tapestry of atmospheric darkness and light. Continue reading “Echtra – BardO (Review)”
Sadhus “The Smoking Community” – Big Fish (Review)
This is the second album from Sadhus “The Smoking Community”, a sludge metal band from Greece.
After enjoying their 2016 split with Agnes Vein, this is my first chance to get to grips with a Sadhus “The Smoking Community” full length album. Big Fish gives us 34 minutes of smoky heaviness and savage stoner doom sludge. Continue reading “Sadhus “The Smoking Community” – Big Fish (Review)”
1914 – The Blind Leading the Blind (Review)
1914 are a Ukrainian blackened death/doom band and this is their second album.
I enjoy 1914’s work a lot, (check out Eschatology of War and their split with Minenwerfer, for example). With an appropriate concept for a band with this name, their latest creation is crushingly heavy and full of monolithic songs that devastate and destroy.
