UK Slam Fest 2024 - Day Two Saturday

Day two of UK Slam Fest. I couldn’t make day one unfortunately, but I had to make sure I was here for today. After all, it promises a glorious celebration of ugly heaviness. It’s brutal, fun, and had to be seen. The Bread Shed is not a venue I’ve been to before, but I like it and I’d happily come back here again.

Spoiler alert – this was a top day of brutality. Even Borat was in attendance, unexpectedly. Nile/Hideous Divinity/Intrepid/Pestifer – Rebellion, Manchester – 10/09/24 (Live Review)

vMe, miss a chance to see the mighty Nile once more? Especially as they’re touring on the back of the very strong The Underworld Awaits Us All? No way. So I once again find myself in the loving care of Rebellion for the evening, and tonight it’s all about the death metal. Saor/Cân Bardd – Rebellion, Manchester – 28/07/24 (Live Review)

Saor Cân Bardd Tour Poster - Rebellion, Manchester - 28 07 24 (Live Review)

I couldn’t miss an opportunity to see Saor again, especially on an event like this – the 10th anniversary of Aura. The entire lineup is good though, although getting to the venue tonight is not without incident, annoyingly. Continue reading “Saor/Cân Bardd – Rebellion, Manchester – 28/07/24 (Live Review)”

Fortress Festival 2024 – Scarborough Spa, Scarborough, 01-02/06/24 (Live Review)

Fotress Festival 2024

What an incredible lineup this is. I mean, just look at it. It’s ridiculous. I’ve never been to Fortress Festival before, (this is its second year), or Scarborough, but this was an event not to be missed. My words below won’t really do justice to what a great festival this was, but hopefully you’ll get a flavour of it at the very least.

Before we get into it – if you’ve ever read one of my live reviews previously you’ll notice that the quality of the photos used here far, far, far outstrips my usual meagre efforts. This is because I didn’t take them. I’m enormously pleased to say that they very talented Aleksandra Hogg captured and supplied all of these photos, and I urge you to check out her work at Acidolka here, here, or here. Marduk/Origin/Doodswens – Club Academy, Manchester – 16/04/24 (Live Review)

Marduk Origin Doodswens - Club Academy, Manchester - 16 04 24 (Live Review)

I’ve been listening to both Marduk and Origin for a long, long, long time, but have never seen either of them. Imagine my surprise and excitement then when I saw this show appear on my radar. Scrumptious stuff indeed. Continue reading “Marduk/Origin/Doodswens – Club Academy, Manchester – 16/04/24 (Live Review)”

Bell Witch/Knoll – Rebellion, Manchester – 14/04/24 (Live Review)

Bell Witch Knoll - Rebellion, ManchesterNow here’s an interesting show. A bill of extremes, from the deathgrind mayhem of Knoll to the funeral doom crawl of Bell Witch. How could I miss such a compelling reason to journey to one of my favourite venues in Manchester once more? Continue reading “Bell Witch/Knoll – Rebellion, Manchester – 14/04/24 (Live Review)”

Enslaved/Svalbard/Wayfarer – Club Academy, Manchester – 08/03/24 (Live Review)

Enslaved Svalbard Wayfarer - Club Academy, Manchester - 08.03.24

Well, what a storming lineup we have here for a chilly Friday night in Manchester. All three of the bands on this bill are worthy of attendance in their own right, so to have them all in one place is a rare treat. Ninkharsag/The Infernal Sea/Devastator/Abduction/The Sun’s Journey Through the Night/Andracca/Imperial Demonic – Rebellion, Manchester – 17/02/24 (Live Review)

Ninkharsag The Infernal Sea Devastator Abduction The Sun's Journey Through the Sky Andracca Imperial Demonic - Rebellion, Manchester - 170224 (Live Review)

This show is a special one, designed to not only highlight some of the best black metal that the UK has to offer, but also to act as a new release showcase, with special sets from many of the bands. It’s sold out too, which is great to see. Cabal/Viscera/Vexed/Lifesick – Rebellion, Manchester – 16/01/24 (Live Review)

Cabal Viscera Vexed Lifesick - Rebellion, Manchester - 16.01.24 (Live Review)

Here’s a tasty show that I knew I wanted to catch. Both Viscera and Cabal are extremely well-regarded at Wonderbox Metal, so this was one for me to not miss. It was, however, one of the less well-attended gigs I’ve been to in a while. A shame, but it’s other people’s loss, as this was a damn good night out. Damnation Festival 2023 – BEC Arena, Manchester, 04/11/23 (Live Review)

Damnation Festiva 2023 - PosterIt’s Damnation o-clock once more! This is always such a good festival to attend. The line up is an interesting and varied one, with some bands I’m less interested in, some that are an essential experience, and some frustrating clashes. I missed some great bands today, unfortunately, but that’s always going to be the case with such a jam-packed festival.
