Interview with Gutter Instinct

Gutter Instinct just keep getting better and better. There, I said it. From the rumbling Swedish death metal monstrosity of The Insurrection, to the blackened death metal of Age of the Fanatics, and now the band’s latest grim opus Heirs of Sisyphus, Gutter Instinct are like an unstoppable juggernaut of carnage and mayhem.

Heirs of Sisyphus sees the band travel even further down the blackened path, while still retaining their core brutality. It’s a real ugly joy to listen to, and lets the listener completely wallow in aggression and darkness for an immersive 46 minutes of total morbid atmosphere and guttural destruction.

Doomed – 6 Anti-Odes to Life (Review)

Doomed is a one man death/doom metal band from Germany, and this is his sixth album.

I have to say I’m a huge fan of Doomed. Our Ruin Silhouettes, Wrath Monolith, and Anna are all stunning examples of how to write and play death/doom; in my experience it’s all too easy for death/doom bands to fall back on the staples of the style and take the easy route when it comes to their music. The artist behind Doomed, however, has a knack for producing music that takes all of the strengths of the style, while avoiding all of its lazy weaknesses, resulting in music that truly adds things that you just don’t really hear other bands do. Witchkiss – The Austere Curtains of Our Eyes (Review)

Witchkiss are a doom/sludge band from the US and this is their debut album.

Here we have a very compelling 42 minutes of heavy doom metal. Mixing in elements of sludge and post-metal, the songs thunder their way through the playing time with a mixture of brute-force intensity and intricate nuance, although the latter is frequently more prevalent than the former. Horrorgraphy – Season of Grief (Review)

Horrorgraphy are a symphonic doom metal band from Greece and this is their debut album.

Here’s a rather unusual release, (for 2018 at least), both in form and consistency; the band is made up of three vocalists and one multi-instrumentalist, while the music is layered old-school doom metal, with a firm symphonic side and rich melodies. Sykelig Englen – Hagall (Review)

Sykelig Englen is a black metal solo project from the UK and this is the artist’s second album.

Hagall features short slices of Scandinavian-influenced black metal. Bands such as Marduk, Mayhem, Shining, and Gorgoroth are probably pretty decent starting reference points, but don’t tell the whole story. If you throw in some depressive black metal alongside this, as well as some other, quirkier elements, then I suppose you’ve largely a got a good idea of what this sounds like.
