Glassing – Twin Dream (Review)

Glassing – Twin Dream (Review)

Glassing - Twin DreamThis is the third album from US blackened post-hardcore band Glassing.

Following on from 2019’s Spotted Horse, Twin Dream delivers 48 minutes of new material, and essentially continues off from where Spotted Horse left off, only improves it in pretty much all respects. Continue reading “Glassing – Twin Dream (Review)”

Qoya – Yōkai (Review)

Qoya – Yōkai (Review)

Qoya - YōkaiQoya are a French doom rock/post-punk band and this is their debut album.

Qoya play an unusual form of doom rock with elements of post-metal and post-punk, along with shades of shoegaze and sludge. This has resulted in a dreamy collection of tracks that have a multifaceted heart that’s rich with emotion. Continue reading “Qoya – Yōkai (Review)”

Illudium – Ash of the Womb (Review)

Illudium – Ash of the Womb (Review)

Illudium - Ash of the WombThis is the second album from Illudium, a post-metal/shoegaze band from the US.

The style on Ash of the Womb is a hybrid one that takes liberally from post-metal, post-rock, shoegaze, grunge, and doom. The end result is a captivating collection of tracks with its own voice. Illudium write music that has recognisable components that you can attribute influences to, but the band exist very much on their own terms. Continue reading “Illudium – Ash of the Womb (Review)”

Kowloon Walled City – Piecework (Review)

Kowloon Walled City - PieceworkThis is the fourth album from US sludge metal band Kowloon Walled City.

It seems like a long time since Grievances saw the light of day in 2015. The band have now returned with Piecework, their shortest and most refined album to date. Continue reading “Kowloon Walled City – Piecework (Review)”

Monthly Overview – the Best of September 2021

Monthly Overview – the Best of September 2021

There was a lot of very fine music that saw the light of day in September. It was a struggle to limit the below list to just a handful of releases, but I think you’ll find below a good selection of metal albums that should satisfy your musical itches… Continue reading “Monthly Overview – the Best of September 2021”

LLNN – Unmaker (Review)

LLNN – Unmaker (Review)

LLNN - UnmakerThis is the third album from Danish post-metallers LLNN.

Having not caught up with the band since 2016’s very enjoyable Loss, it seemed like a great time to check out what LLNN are up to with their latest release. Continue reading “LLNN – Unmaker (Review)”

Lunar Ark – Recurring Nightmare (Review)

Lunar Ark – Recurring Nightmare (Review)

Lunar Ark - Recurring NightmareLunar Ark are a blackened doom band from the US and this is their debut album.

Each of the three tracks on this 49-minute album is a hideous, heaving monstrosity of grim blackened sludge and malevolent drone doom. It’s deeply nasty stuff, yet not without redeeming features. Continue reading “Lunar Ark – Recurring Nightmare (Review)”

Vow – Icarian (Review)

Vow – Icarian (Review)

Vow - IcarianVow are a UK post-metal band and this is their second release.

Is this an EP or an album? The promo blurb says album, but then it only contains two tracks and lasts a total of 17 minutes. Either way, it’s worth getting your hands on, as Vow’s experimental post-metal is very tasty indeed. Continue reading “Vow – Icarian (Review)”

Moon Machine – Moon Machine (Review)

Moon Machine – Moon Machine (Review)

Moon Machine - Moon MachineThis is the debut album from US progressive rock band Moon Machine.

I was initially attracted to this album by the evocative album art, and the suggestion that it should appeal to fans of Porcupine Tree, Devin Townsend, Opeth, Alcest, Anathema, and Tool. Sold. Of course, there’s always the danger of being disappointed, but thankfully Moon Machine lived up to its promise. Continue reading “Moon Machine – Moon Machine (Review)”

King Woman – Celestial Blues (Review)

King Woman – Celestial Blues (Review)

King Woman - Celestial BluesKing Woman are a doom metal band from the US. This is their second album.

Here we have 41 minutes of atmospheric doom metal, flavoured with aspects of post-metal and shoegaze, as well as some dreampop, and avant-garde tendencies. This means that overall King Woman’s sound is an atypical one, and they’ve successfully managed to carve their own niche in a crowded scene. Continue reading “King Woman – Celestial Blues (Review)”
