Somnuri – Nefarious Wave (Review)
Somnuri are a sludge metal band from the US. and this is their second album.
Featuring an ex-member of Cleanteeth, Somnuri’s sound can best be described as something like progressive sludge metal. The promo blurb mentions bands such as High on Fire, Mastodon, Converge, Torche, and Baroness, and this sets the scene nicely. However, while all of the Continue reading “Somnuri – Nefarious Wave (Review)”
The Hyena Kill – A Disconnect (Review)
The Hyena Kill are a UK rock band and this is their second album.
With a promo blurb that mentions bands such as Deftones, Nirvana, and Chelsea Wolfe, I was intrigued by what The Hyena Kill’s sound would actually be. It turns out Continue reading “The Hyena Kill – A Disconnect (Review)”
Sunnata – Burning in Heaven, Melting on Earth (Review)
Sunnata are a Polish doom metal band and this is their fourth album.
Sunnata play a form of doom metal that has ritualistic elements, manifesting in a tendency for repetition and hypnotic grooves. Despite this, the band know how to write a good tune, surprisingly so really; some of Continue reading “Sunnata – Burning in Heaven, Melting on Earth (Review)”
Emma Ruth Rundle & Thou – The Helm of Sorrow (Review)
This is a collaboration between post-rock/folk solo artist Emma Ruth Rundle and doom/sludge metallers Thou, both from the US.
This is the second collaboration between these two artists, although sadly I managed to miss out on the full album that the two released together last year. On the strength of The Helm of Sorrow, this is a real shame, as something special appears to have been created here. Continue reading “Emma Ruth Rundle & Thou – The Helm of Sorrow (Review)”
Paul Catten – The Beauty of Decay (Review)
Paul Catten is a prolific UK extreme metal artist and this is his latest album.
We’ve met Paul Catten before, (here, here and here), and you never know what you’re going to get from the man. His latest release is far more accessible and pop-influenced than I was expecting, and it Continue reading “Paul Catten – The Beauty of Decay (Review)”
Escape Is Not Freedom – Surrounded by the Great Nothing (Review)
Escape Is Not Freedom are an alternative/sludge metal band, and this is their second album.
Escape Is Not Freedom are no strangers to this site, (here and here), and it’s great to hear some new material from them. Combining elements of metal, sludge, rock, and noise, Escape Is Not Freedom remind me of a cross between Fudge Tunnel, Helmet, Nirvana, Skyscraper, and others. Continue reading “Escape Is Not Freedom – Surrounded by the Great Nothing (Review)”
Year of the Cobra – Ash and Dust (Review)
This is the second album from US doomsters Year of the Cobra.
I always enjoy Year of the Cobra’s work. Both …in the Shadows Below and Burn Your Dead were characterful displays of doom metal, played with skill and talent. As such, I’m pleased by the band’s return on Ash and Dust; 41 minutes of guitar-free doom anthems. Continue reading “Year of the Cobra – Ash and Dust (Review)”
Lo-Pan – Subtle (Review)
This is the fifth album from US hard/stoner rockers Lo-Pan.
This sort of highly engaging and infectious stoner-influenced hard rock is not typically my sort of thing most of the time, but it’s hard to deny how damn good Lo-Pan are at what they do. I really, really got Continue reading “Lo-Pan – Subtle (Review)”
Aver – Orbis Majora (Review)
This is the second album from Aver, a progressive stoner rock band from Australia.
Aver play sprawling, spacefaring music that combines stoner and psychedelic influences into a progressive framework. The end result is 51 minutes of material divided into just 5 tracks. Continue reading “Aver – Orbis Majora (Review)”
