Ever since first hearing The Eternal Marshes I’ve been a fan of what Bismuth do. Over the years they’ve continued to develop their bass-drum-synth-low-end-heavy-doom-assault-on-the-senses approach to music. Every release essentially sees them rising to new heights of both extremity and nuance, and this has now culminated in this new colossal album. Leonov – Wake (Review)

Leonov - WakeLeonov are a Norwegian doom/post-metal band, and this is their second album.

Mixing together the heart of doom with the pulse post-metal, Wake is a collection of tracks that have a deep melodic core and depth of feeling to them. In fact, powered by negative emotion, this is an album filled to the brim with feelings of loss, woe, despair, and plaintive nostalgia. It’s never maudlin though, and frequently beautiful. Megaton Leviathan – Mage (Review)

Megaton Leviathan MageMegaton Leviathan are a US psychedelic rock/doom band, and this is their third album.

Now here’s a band that have flowered quite impressively since their already very accomplished 2014 album Past 21: Beyond the Arctic Cell. Vanhelgd – Deimos Sanktuarium (Review)

VanhelgdThis is the fifth album from Vanhelgd, a death metal band from Sweden.

Both 2014’s Relics of Sulphur Salvation and 2016’s Temple of Phobos are prime examples of quality and creative death metal done right. The latter made it onto my 2016 end of year list, such was the impression it made. As such, I’ve been eagerly awaiting more material from this sterling band. Despite Windhand being one of the higher profile examples of this type of music, their split with Satan’s Satyrs was my first exposure to them.
