Gravewards – Ruinous Ensoulment (Review)

GravewardsThis is the debut album from Gravewards, a Greek death metal band.

I have fond recollections of 2017’s Subconscious Lobotomy, so was pleased to see this band’s debut album appear. It’s 43 minutes of old-school death metal that’s influenced by the death metal greats from the 90s, while Continue reading “Gravewards – Ruinous Ensoulment (Review)”

Skullcrush – Visions of the Firestorm Eclipse (Review)

SkullcrushThis is an EP from Skullcrush, a death metal band from the US.

Containing a mixture of different gruesome ingredients, you can hear Suffocation, Bolt Thrower, and even a touch of old Amorphis in Skullcrush’s sound. Across the 22 minutes on this EP the band combine these influences and more into a ghastly blend of grim, dirty death metal. Continue reading “Skullcrush – Visions of the Firestorm Eclipse (Review)”

Eroded – Necropath (Review)

ErodedEroded are an Italian death metal band and this is their second album.

Featuring 35 minutes of 90s-styled old-school death metal, Eroded have produced a worthy and enjoyable album here. With war metal influences, (musically, if not thematically), and a Scandinavian veneer, Necropath is Hellishly good fun.

Slaughterday – Abattoir (Review)

SlaughterdaySlaughterday are a German death metal band and this is their latest EP.

I have a huge soft spot for Slaughterday. Ostensibly no different to any number of other old-school death metal bands, there’s just something hard to define about them that I just really enjoy, (check out Nightmare Vortex, Ravenous, and Laws of the Occult to see what I mean). Having enjoyed both The Aftermath and The Dead and Those About to Die, a new Just Before Dawn release is always welcome.

Down Among the Dead Men – …And You Will Obey Me (Review)

Down Among the Dead MenThis is the third album from Down Among the Dead Men, an international death metal/crust supergroup.

The two main members of this band have a wealth of experience between them. This includes, (but is not limited to), Echelon, Megascavenger, Paganizer, The Grotesquery, Those Who Bring the Torture, Just Before Dawn and Ursinne). Phew, that’s a lot of expertise. Strangle Wire – The Dark Triad (Review)

Strangle WireStrangle Wire are an Irish death metal band and this is their latest EP.

This is the follow up to the band’s debut release Narcissism, which was an enjoyable brief introduction to Strangle Wire’s brand of nastiness. They are now back, and I’ve pleased to say they have built on their initial promise. Both of the songs on the band’s first release have resurfaced on The Dark Triad, but now they’ve brought friends to the party too. Continue reading “Strangle Wire – The Dark Triad (Review)”

Nadir – The Sixth Extinction (Review)

NadirNadir are a sludge/death metal band from Hungary and this is their sixth album.

The Sixth Extinction features 33 minutes of sludgy death metal. Think of a cross between Crowbar and Bolt Thrower and you’ll not be too far off from where Nadir operate. There’s also a touch of Obituary, Coffins, Incantation, and High on Fire here and there. Continue reading “Nadir – The Sixth Extinction (Review)”
