Blood Abscission – I I (Review)

Blood Abscission - I IThis is the second album from black metal band Blood Abscission.

I I contains 41 minutes of black metal that’s melodic and atmospheric. However, this is such a simple description for something so exceptional. Blood Abscission have created a record that’s destined to stay with me for some time. Holy crap this is good. Continue reading “Blood Abscission – I I (Review)”

Church of the Sea – Eva (Review)

Church of the Sea - EvaThis is the second album from Greek doom band Church of the Sea.

Church of the Sea play an evocative form of doomgaze. The component parts of Eva are doom, shoegaze, electronic rock, and darkwave. These are brought together by the band into a 31-minute exploration of ethereal soundscapes. Continue reading “Church of the Sea – Eva (Review)”

Soliloquium – Famine (Review)

Soliloquium - FamineThis is the fifth album from Swedish death/doom band Soliloquium.

It’s always a pleasure to receive a new Soliloquium album. 2020’s Things We Leave Behind and 2022’s Soulsearching both hit harder than the melodic death/doom style typically does for me. Will the 57-minute, (with bonus track), Famine continue this high quality trend? Continue reading “Soliloquium – Famine (Review)”

Messa – The Spin (Review)

Messa - The SpinMessa are an Italian doom band and this is their fourth album.

Messa are one of the more notable bands to appear in recent times. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed watching them progress from 2016’s Belfry, to 2018’s Feast for Water, to 2022’s Close, all the time enriching and refining their doomy sound ever further. In fact, the latter two albums appeared on my end of year lists for their respective years. All of which is to say; expectations are high for The Spin. Continue reading “Messa – The Spin (Review)”

Dormant Ordeal – Tooth and Nail (Review)

Dormant Ordeal - Tooth and NailThis is the fourth album by Polish death metallers Dormant Ordeal.

2021’s The Grand Scheme of Things was a notable slab of death metal heaviness, so I’ve been looking forward to Tooth and Nail. Across 47 minutes Dormant Ordeal once again showcase their expressive brand of Polish death metal. Continue reading “Dormant Ordeal – Tooth and Nail (Review)”

Putrid Offal – Obliterated Life (Review)

Putrid Offal - Obliterated LifeThis is the third album from French deathgrinders Putrid Offal.

Wow, has it really been ten years since 2015’s Mature Necropsy? That’s depressing. Less depressing is that we have a new Putrid Offal album to ease the terrible passage of time. With 35 minutes of new material, Obliterated Life is a wrecking ball of deathgrind nastiness. Continue reading “Putrid Offal – Obliterated Life (Review)”

Versatile – Les Litanies du Vide (Review)

Versatile - Les Litanies du VideThis is debut album from Swiss industrial black metal band Versatile.

I did something unusual with this album – I went into it completely fresh, without hearing anything from them at all. I normally sample everything first to see if it’s my thing or not, but here a combination of the album cover and logo made me just want to listen to it, regardless. What did I find? Continue reading “Versatile – Les Litanies du Vide (Review)”

Cytotoxin – Biographyte (Review)

Cytotoxin - BiographyteThis is the fifth album from German death metallers Cytotoxin.

2020’s Nuklearth was a very good album, so it’s great to have Cytotoxin back once more. Containing 48 minutes of new material, Biographyte offers a radioactive feast of death metal for us to savour and enjoy. It’s the band’s longest album, but fear not, Cytotoxin know what they’re doing. Continue reading “Cytotoxin – Biographyte (Review)”

In the Woods… – Otra (Review)

the Woods... - OtraIn the Woods… are a Norwegian progressive metal band and this is their seventh album.

I thoroughly enjoyed 2022’s Diversum, so was pleased when Otra appeared on the horizon. Across 47 minutes In the Woods… deliver a richly engaging album, full of textured and high quality songcraft. Continue reading “In the Woods… – Otra (Review)”
