The Ocean – Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic (Review)
This is the eighth album from progressive metal heavyweights The Ocean.
The first album of a two part release, this is another sprawling epic from this incredibly talented band. The Ocean have never been ones to shy away from a complex concept, and this latest album is no different. Continue reading “The Ocean – Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic (Review)”
Built-in Obsolescence – Instar (Review)
Built-in Obsolescence are a progressive/post-metal band from Italy. This is their debut album.
Here we have 61 minutes of post-metal with progressive tendencies. Modelled on influences such as The Ocean, Cult of Luna, Isis, and a touch of Tool, Built-in Obsolescence mould elements of these to satisfy their own vision of what heavy music should sound like in 2018. Continue reading “Built-in Obsolescence – Instar (Review)”
King Goat – Debt of Aeons (Review)
This is the second album from King Goat, a progressive doom metal band from the UK.
I’ve been extremely excited for this one. This is a band that takes everything I love about traditional doom metal and combines it with a progressive metal element that sees the songs soar above almost all of their so-called peers with ease. Continue reading “King Goat – Debt of Aeons (Review)”
Dreamarcher – Harding (Review)
Dreamarcher are a Norwegian metal band and this is their latest EP.
Dreamarcher’s 2016 self-titled debut album was notable for its atypical approach to emotive heavy music. It was an enjoyable album, and Harding is even more so.
The impressive musical skills of the jazz-trained band members are put to good use across these 18 minutes of non-standard delivery and passionate intensity. Continue reading “Dreamarcher – Harding (Review)”
A Light Within – Epilogue (Review)
This is the latest EP from A Light Within, a post-metal band from the US.
This is atmospheric post-metal with some progressive and post-rock elements. Take the post-metal triumvirate of Isis, Neurosis, and Cult of Luna, and throw in some Deftones, The Ocean, and Devil Sold His Soul, and you’ll have a basic starting point. Continue reading “A Light Within – Epilogue (Review)”
Coilguns – Millennials (Review)
Coilguns are a hardcore band from Switzerland and this is their second album.
Playing music that’s intricate and full of lethal promise, this is 39 minutes of focused violence and barely restrained aggression. The songs on this album are full of intensity and harshness, but in a controlled and directed manner. Continue reading “Coilguns – Millennials (Review)”
Nevborn – Daidalos (Review)
This is the latest EP from Swiss progressive/post-metal band Nevborn.
A progressive post-metal EP that is just a single 19 minute song? Count me in! What’s that? It also features the supreme vocal talents of the singer of The Ocean? Stop, stop, you’re just overselling it now… Continue reading “Nevborn – Daidalos (Review)”
