Baptists – Beacon of Faith (Review)

BaptistsBaptists are a Canadian hardcore band and this is their third album.

I very much enjoyed 2014’s Bloodmines, so a new record form Baptists is well overdue.

The band’s trademark blend of violent hardcore, punk, and noise rock is intact and well, but on this latest release they have developed the latter part of their sound to a greater degree. This has resulted in a more involved and Continue reading “Baptists – Beacon of Faith (Review)”

The Human Race Is Filth – Liberate (Review)

The Human Race Is FilthThe Human Race Is Filth are a US grindcore band and this is their second EP.

Here we have 15 minutes of vicious grindcore mixed with sludge, punk, and crust.

Although for the average person this release is likely to be heard as a relentlessly impenetrable wall of noise, for those that are connoisseurs of all things extreme metal, there’s a surprising amount of variety on this short, violent Continue reading “The Human Race Is Filth – Liberate (Review)”

Wolvhammer – The Monuments of Ash & Bone (Review)

WolvhammerThis is the fourth album from US black metallers Wolvhammer.

This is the much-awaited follow-up to 2014’s Clawing into Black Sun, which was one of my favourite releases of that year. To say I’ve been looking forward to this album is an understatement. Continue reading “Wolvhammer – The Monuments of Ash & Bone (Review)”

Down Among the Dead Men – …And You Will Obey Me (Review)

Down Among the Dead MenThis is the third album from Down Among the Dead Men, an international death metal/crust supergroup.

The two main members of this band have a wealth of experience between them. This includes, (but is not limited to), Echelon, Megascavenger, Paganizer, The Grotesquery, Those Who Bring the Torture, Just Before Dawn and Ursinne). Phew, that’s a lot of expertise. Precaria/Deathspiral of Inherited Suffering/Dominus Ira – Metamorphosphoros – Split (Review)

Precaria Deathspiral of Inherited Suffering Dominus IraThis is a split between three black metal bands, Precaria from Mexico, Deathspiral of Inherited Suffering from the US, and Dominus Ira from Russia.

This is a split based around a single concept, (the concept of Theion, the divine fire that burns but never consumes), with each band contributing their individual vision of occult black metal to the overarching whole. A lot of time and effort has obviously gone into this release, which is reflected in the lengthy playing time of 68 minutes. Agathocles/Psychoneurosis – War Fetisjists Kill/Grind Resurrection – Split (Review)

AgathoclesThis is a split between two grindcore bands, Agathocles from Belgium and Psychoneurosis from Poland.

Black Mass Pervertor – Life Beyond the Walls of Flesh (Review)

Black Mass PervertorBlack Mass Pervertor are a Finnish black metal band and this is their latest EP.

As this is the band’s first outpouring of filth since 2016’s Phanerosis, I knew I had to expose myself to their virulent and toxic take on black metal as soon as I could. Hey, it’s worth the risk. Continue reading “Black Mass Pervertor – Life Beyond the Walls of Flesh (Review)”

Aux Era – Aux Era (Review)

Aux EraAux Era are a US experimental/progressive rock band and this is their debut album.

Here we have around 38 minutes of experimental psychedelic rock. Fusing elements of psychedelia, post-rock, progressive rock, and punk into involved and exploratory songs, this is a compelling release that’s easy to like if you’re a fan of expressive and well-developed progressive rock. Continue reading “Aux Era – Aux Era (Review)”

Systemik Viølence – Anarquia-Violência (Review)

Systemik ViolenceThis is the latest EP from Systemik Viølence, a blackened hardcore punk band based in Portugal.

Brutally old-school punk is mixed with something like Darkthrone’s rawest nightmares to create short, blistering songs of dark intensity and suprising catchiness. Continue reading “Systemik Viølence – Anarquia-Violência (Review)”
