Pyre – Chained to Ossuaries (Review)

Pyre - Chained to OssuariesThis is the second album from Russian death metallers Pyre.

It’s been six years since Human Hecatomb, but now the well-regarded Pyre have returned. This is old-school death metal, unapologetic and unrefined, just as it should be. Taking influence from the Swedish style, (but not exclusively), Chained to Ossuaries gives us 41 minutes of strong material. Fans of Dismember, Asphyx, and Autopsy pay attention. Funeral Leech – Death Meditation (Review)

Funeral Leech - Death MeditationFuneral Leech are a death/doom metal band from the US and this is their debut album.

With a name like Funeral Leech how could you not want to check out Death Meditation? That’s certainly what made me pay attention to them. It’s paid off too, as Funeral Leech have not disappointed. Continue reading “Funeral Leech – Death Meditation (Review)”

Wombbath – Choirs of the Fallen (Review)

Wombbath - Choirs of the FallenWombbath are a Swedish death metal band and this is their fourth album.

SWEDISH DEATH METAL!!! Yeah! Wombbath return to give us another 50 minutes of the good stuff. I have a soft spot for this style that’s undeniable, but Wombbath have proven their worth in the past. Featuring members of bands such as Ashcloud, Henry Kane, Just Before Dawn, Gods Forsaken, Heads for the Dead, Ursinne, Repulsive Vision, and many others, you know that the style is in experienced hands before even pressing play. Plague – Portraits of Mind (Review)

Plague - Portraits of MindPlague are a Greek death metal band and this is their debut album.

Plague are an old-school death metal band that take influence from the 90s American scene, but do so in such a way that they seem to make it their own. This is ultimately a chunky slab of timeless death metal, shot through with classic influences, as well as some modern ones too. Despite an obvious debt to the mighty Death, the music has its own personality and brutal charm that can’t be denied. Continue reading “Plague – Portraits of Mind (Review)”

Coffin Curse – Ceased to Be (Review)

Coffin Curse - Ceased to BeCoffin Curse are a death metal band from Chile and this is their debut album.

Here we have 40 minutes of classic death metal. It’s a simple and effective old-school formula that Coffin Curse have, and they use it very well indeed. Continue reading “Coffin Curse – Ceased to Be (Review)”

Macabre Demise – Awakening (Review)

Macabre Demise - AwakeningMacabre Demise is a one-man death metal band from Germany. This is the project’s third album.

Now here’s a band that always seems to hit the spot for me. Both 2015’s Homicidal Parasites and 2017’s Apocalypse demonstrated in no uncertain terms how effective Macabre Demise’s music could be, and now we’re treated to a third full-length. Continue reading “Macabre Demise – Awakening (Review)”

Strigoi – Abandon All Faith (Review)

Strigoi - Abandon All FaithThis is the debut album from UK death metal band Strigoi.

Brought to us from the guitarist of Paradise Lost, rising out of the ashes of his Vallenfyre project, he’s joined on Srigoi by members of both bands, (one of which is also an ex-member of Extreme Noise Terror), giving us 44 minutes of engaging and individual death metal. Continue reading “Strigoi – Abandon All Faith (Review)”

Orthodoxy – Novus Lux Dominus (Review)

Orthodoxy - Novus Lux DominusThis is the debut album from Spanish death metallers Orthodoxy.

On their first record Orthodoxy deliver 43 minutes of death metal that’s dark and malevolent. Taking influence from old-school death metal acts, (such as Incantation and Immolation, but without being limited to these), Novus Lux Dominus is a satisfying example of an album that’s both crushingly heavy and atmospherically malignant.
