While August was a slower month than some others have been this year for first class metal albums, it was still home to more than enough top releases to warrant this list. Continue reading “Monthly Overview – the Best of August 2021”

Wharflurch – Psychedelic Realms ov Hell (Review)
This is the debut album from US death metal band Wharflurch.
Across six tracks and 35 minutes, Wharflurch deliver a doom-infested slab of malformed, rancid death metal.
Wharflurch’s death metal contains an experimental edge that’s been dulled by humid rot, but is no less striking and potent for it. Continue reading “Wharflurch – Psychedelic Realms ov Hell (Review)”
Vow – Icarian (Review)
Vow are a UK post-metal band and this is their second release.
Is this an EP or an album? The promo blurb says album, but then it only contains two tracks and lasts a total of 17 minutes. Either way, it’s worth getting your hands on, as Vow’s experimental post-metal is very tasty indeed. Continue reading “Vow – Icarian (Review)”
Hooded Menace – The Tritonus Bell (Review)
This is the sixth album from Finnish death/doom band Hooded Menace.
Following on from 2015’s Darkness Drips Forth and 2018’s Ossuarium Silhouettes Unhallowed, The Tritonus Bell is another gruesome slab of death/doom, only this time it has been infused with a greater amount of classic heavy metal influences. Continue reading “Hooded Menace – The Tritonus Bell (Review)”
Headshrinker – Callous Indifference (Review)
Headshrinker are a death metal band from the US and this is their debut album.
Headshrinker play old-school death metal that incorporates in varying doses, crushing doom, dark black metal, and intricate technicality. Theirs is an atypical approach to death metal, yet one that still benefits from the raw visceral nature of the style. Imagine a cross between Tomb Mold and Ulthar on one hand, and Pyrrhon and Imperial Triumphant on the other, and you’ll be on the right lines for a decent idea of what this album’s 38 minutes hold. Continue reading “Headshrinker – Callous Indifference (Review)”
The Slow Death – Siege (Review)
This is the fourth album from Australian death/doom band The Slow Death.
The Slow Death contain current and ex-members of bands such as Illimitable Dolor and Temple Nightside. On Siege, we are given 63 minutes of crushing death/doom metal, which also contains elements of Gothic metal and funeral doom. Featuring four colossal songs, this is a dark and gloomy trip into a world of multifaceted misery and woe. Continue reading “The Slow Death – Siege (Review)”
Devoid of Thought – Outer World Graves (Review)
This is the debut album from Italian death metal band Devoid of Thought.
Billed as cosmic death metal for fans of Blood Incantation, Timeghoul, Voivod, Demilich, and Incantation, Devoid of Thought’s music is cavernous and grim. The band’s raw approach is infused with a doom foundation and gifted with a knack for unusual melodic touches and creative Continue reading “Devoid of Thought – Outer World Graves (Review)”
Fragment Soul – Axiom of Choice (Review)
Fragment Soul are a Greek progressive doom band, and this is their debut album.
Axiom of Choice is a richly expressive work, which focuses on building atmosphere and emotion across four highly engaging songs, lasting 42 minutes in total. There’s no real heaviness or metal here, so don’t be misled by any of the genre tags or band references; this is slow, ethereal, gentle, and filled with feeling. It’s an album of depth and expansive ambience that, if you’re a fan of the style, should firmly root itself into your music collection. Continue reading “Fragment Soul – Axiom of Choice (Review)”
Yanomamo/Slomatics – Split (Review)
Slomatics are from the UK and Yanomamo are from Australia, both play doom/sludge metal.
I’m unfamiliar with Yanomamo, but Continue reading “Yanomamo/Slomatics – Split (Review)”
Borboropsis – Decorticated Burial of Delirium (Review)
This is the debut EP from US death/doom metal band Borboropsis.
This release offers up 24 minutes of atmospheric heaviness that holds a lot of promise for the future. The music combines cavernous old-school death metal with mood-focused slabs of doom, and it does this Continue reading “Borboropsis – Decorticated Burial of Delirium (Review)”
