And the floodgates were opened! October boasted so many strong metal albums that I have just really, really fallen for, it’s ridiculous. Choosing which ones to showcase here was hard, and I dislike leaving out so many other good releases. However, in the interests of brevity, here are my top picks for October… Continue reading “Monthly Overview – the Best of October 2022”

Abyssic – Brought Forth in Iniquity (Review)
This is the third album from Norwegian symphonic death/doom band Abyssic.
Oh my, here’s one I’ve definitely been looking forward to. 2015’s A Winter’s Tale and High the Memory were both stunning records that have only grown in my estimation over time. Towering monoliths of symphonic doom and misery, those records have definitely made me hungry for Brought Forth in Iniquity. Continue reading “Abyssic – Brought Forth in Iniquity (Review)”
Worm – Bluenothing (Review)
This is the latest EP from Worm, a blackened death/doom band from the US.
Worm return! After the monstrous slab of blackened doom malevolence that was 2021’s Foreverglade, Worm are back with 27 minutes of foul new material. Continue reading “Worm – Bluenothing (Review)”
Chrome Ghost – House of Falling Ash (Review)
This is the third album from US doom metal band Chrome Ghost.
Okay, let’s get right down to this – House of Falling Ash represents pure emotion given musical form. Crushed into a mere 51 minutes, these highly expressive doom metal hymns drip with emotion and atmospheric presence, and present the listener with an absorbing experience that they might not emerge from unscathed. Continue reading “Chrome Ghost – House of Falling Ash (Review)”
The Otolith – Folium Limina (Review)
This is the debut album from The Otolith, a doom band from the US.
The Otolith contain ex-members of Subrosa and play an avant-garde form of doom. Folium Limina features 63 minutes of rich, expressive material. Imagine a mix of Neurosis, Dreadnought, Worm Ouroboros, and Daxma, and you’ll have a rough idea of what to expect. Continue reading “The Otolith – Folium Limina (Review)”
Ggu:ll – Ex Est (Review)
This is the second album from Ggu:ll, a blackened doom band from the Netherlands.
Featuring ex-members of Dodecahedron, Ex Est contains 45 minutes of music that’s sharp, bleak, and harsh. With the promo blurb stating that Ex Est is for fans of Mizmor, Bell Witch, Lord Mantis, Bongripper, and Funeral Mist, I couldn’t help but be intrigued. Let’s dive in… Continue reading “Ggu:ll – Ex Est (Review)”
Mother of Graves – Where the Shadows Adorn (Review)
This is the debut album from US death/doom metal band Mother of Graves.
So, here we have it then. After the very enjoyable 2021 EP In Sombre Dreams we now get to see whether that release’s promise has paid off on a full length album. Can Mother of Graves maintain the quality levels that they have already introduced us to? Continue reading “Mother of Graves – Where the Shadows Adorn (Review)”
Ritual Dictates – No Great Loss (Review)
This is the second album from Canadian metallers Ritual Dictates.
Featuring current and ex-members of 3 Inches of Blood and Revocation, this is an atypical album that probably doesn’t sound like you’re expecting it to. It certainly took me by surprise, in a very pleasant way. Continue reading “Ritual Dictates – No Great Loss (Review)”
Lord of Confusion – Evil Mystery (Review)
This is the debut album from Lord of Confusion, a Portuguese doom metal band.
Evil Mystery contains 45 minutes of psychedelic doom, replete with macabre keyboards and funereal dirges aplenty. This is one for fans of Electric Wizard, Dead Witches, and Windhand. Continue reading “Lord of Confusion – Evil Mystery (Review)”
Sumerlands – Dreamkiller (Review)
This is the second album from US heavy metallers Sumerlands.
Featuring a member of Vestal Claret, Dreamkiller contains 35 minutes of traditional heavy metal and AOR songwriting smarts. Continue reading “Sumerlands – Dreamkiller (Review)”
