Monolithe – Zeta Reticuli (Review)

MonolitheMonolithe are a French doom band, and this is their sixth album.

Monolithe are no stranger to this site, having been covered previously here, here and here. This latest album is the second part, a companion release, as it were, to their last one, Epsilon Aurigae, and continues their evolution away from their original funeral doom style into uncharted territories.

Like Epsilon Aurigae, Zeta Reticuli sees the band keeping aspects of funeral doom, but adding increasingly progressive influences to their sound. It also sees them keeping the same format – three songs, 15:00 minutes each, exactly.

Epic, sprawling, grandiose and ambitious are all words that can easily be applied to Monolithe, and the three tracks on Zeta Reticuli are not lacking in any of these.

Monolithe slowly crawl forward, like something enormous and relentless, unstoppable. The deep granite-like growls sound like huge boulders being dragged across stone. These juxtapose nicely against the airy, atmospheric keyboards that pervade the work. The last track, The Barren Depths, even introduces bold new clean vocals, which was surprising the first time around as I wasn’t expecting them. In true Monolithe style though, they work very well and add another dimension to the band, further propelling them along the progressive metal spectrum.

Once again Monolithe have crafted a release that continues to show why they are at the top of the doom game. Zeta Reticuli consolidates the strengths that they forged on Epsilon Aurigae, confirming my belief that they are one of the very best at what they do.

If you like doom then this is a must.
