Vafurlogi – Gneisti af eldi Guðs (Review)

Vafurlogi - Gneisti af eldi GuðsThis is the second album from Icelandic black metallers Vafurlogi.

Following on from 2024’s Í Vökulli ÁþjánGneisti af eldi Guðs delivers 49 minutes of new material. Now rounded out to a full band, Vafurlogi’s black metal has been greater developed. The band were already in a good place with their music, but now they’ve taken things up a step.

Yep, this is damn good. Vafurlogi entice the listener with melodic texture, atmospheric depth, and searing aggression, unveiling soundscapes that are worth taking the time to explore. A blazing blend of melody and ferocity, the melodies twist, soar, and shine, and there’s a dissonant edge that keeps things fresh. The record is an immersive, compelling one, taking strengths from multiple sources to provide an experience that’s satisfying and rewarding.

Gneisti ad eldi Giðs is dark and esoteric, yet carries with it a spectral spark of 90s splendour that’s remarkably engaging. The spirit of ancient times infects the songs, yet also allows enough space for the fact that Vafurlogi bring with them complementary contemporary Icelandic influences. It’s a record that’s easy to enjoy if you’re accustomed to either strain of black metal.

Over time Gneisti ad eldi Giðs reveals itself to have a fiery heart of darkness, one that Vafurlogi passionately keep kindled. Strong songwriting, a warm production, and an immaculate execution mean that Gneisti ad eldi Giðs is a stellar record through and through. In essence, Gneisti ad eldi Giðs brings together old and new in seven high quality songs that burn with blackened might.

Essential listening.
