Unfleshing – Violent Reason (Review)

Unfleshing - Violent ReasonUnfleshing are a blackened crust band from the US and this is their debut album.

Violent Reason is a 25-minute snarling monstrosity of black metal, hardcore, crust, and grindcore. Unfleshing’s debut record is a beast. Continue reading “Unfleshing – Violent Reason (Review)”

Cross Bringer – Healismus Aeternus (Review)

Cross Bringer - Healismus AeternusCross Bringer are a black metal band from Russia and this is their second album.

Brought to us by the singer of Predatory Void and the drummer of Downfall of Gaia, Healismus Aeternus contains 27 minutes of scathing modern black metal. Taking influences from post-black metal, blackened hardcore, and crust, and building them into a whirlwind of intricate ferocity, Healismus Aeternus is a rewarding album that should find favour with fans of bands such as Black Birch, Celeste, Hexis, Rorcal, Still, The Sun’s Journey Through the Night, and Wiegedood. Lay Waste – Savage Rebellion (Review)

Lay Waste - Savage RebellionLay Waste are a grindcore band from the US and this is their debut EP.

I’m going to try to listen to more grindcore this year. It’s a genre I love, but has been a bit thin on the ground for my tastes for the last few years. With that in mind, I randomly came across Lay Waste on Bandcamp, so here we are with my first new grind listening experience of 2025. Continue reading “Lay Waste – Savage Rebellion (Review)”

Alcest/Svalbard/Doodseskader – Academy 2, Manchester – 12/12/24 (Live Review)

Alcest Svalbard Doodseskader - Academy 2, Manchester - 12.12.24 (Live Review)

I’ve never seen Alcest before, so this was a great opportunity to remedy that, especially as the wonderful Svalbard were also playing. Doodseskader too, but I don’t really know them. Continue reading “Alcest/Svalbard/Doodseskader – Academy 2, Manchester – 12/12/24 (Live Review)”

Mammoth Grinder – Undying Spectral Resonance (Review)

Mammoth Grinder - Undying Spectral ResonanceMammoth Grinder are a death metal band from the US and this is their latest EP.

It has been a long six years since 2018’s Cosmic Crypt, but Mammoth Grinder have once again dragged themselves out from their tombs and are ready to lay waste once more. Bringing with them 14 minutes of new music in the form of Undying Spectral Resonance, Mammoth Grinder’s reappearance is brief, but impactful. Immortal Bird – Sin Querencia (Review)

Immortal Bird - Sin QuerenciaThis is the third album from US blackened extreme metallers Immortal Bird.

It’s been a long time since 2019’s Thrive on Neglect and an even longer time since 2015’s Empress/Abscess, (a standout release of that year), so it’s a real treat to have Immortal Bird back with us. Continue reading “Immortal Bird – Sin Querencia (Review)”

Wormwitch – Wormwitch (Review)

Wormwitch - WormwitchThis is the fourth album from Canadian black metallers Wormwitch.

New Wormwitch! I’m a bit behind on this one, but I couldn’t let it pass me by. Whether it’s 2019’s Heaven That Dwells Within, 2021’s Wolf Hex, or this year’s split with Sadistic Ritual, Wormwitch always deliver the goods. Continue reading “Wormwitch – Wormwitch (Review)”

Immune to Them – Vomit the Chains (Review)

Immune to Them - Vomit the ChainsThis is the debut EP from Spanish grindcore band Immune to Them.

Five tracks, 10 minutes – it’s time for a hit of grinding ferocity from Immune to Them. Vomit the Chains marks a new entrant into the grindcore killing arena, and we may have a future champion on our hands. Continue reading “Immune to Them – Vomit the Chains (Review)”

Unearthly Rites – Ecdysis (Review)

Unearthly Rites - EcdysisUnearthly Rites are a Finnish death metal band and this is their debut album.

Here’s some nasty death metal for you to clog up your pores. Ecdysis is a sludge factory of old-school death metal that really brings out the filth in the style. Across 34 minutes Unearthly Rites spread their disease with convincing menace and a swamp’s worth of heaviness. Continue reading “Unearthly Rites – Ecdysis (Review)”

Crawl – Altar of Disgust (Review)

Crawl - Altar of DisgustCrawl are a death metal band from Sweden and this is their second album.

I thoroughly enjoyed 2018’s Rituals, so was pleased when Crawl’s split with Feral appeared last year. They’re now back again with Altar of Disgust, which delivers 31 minutes of crust-driven Swedeath heaviness. Continue reading “Crawl – Altar of Disgust (Review)”
