Featuring current and ex-members of bands such as Darkest Hour, Iron Reagan, and Power Trip, it seems like an age since we’ve had a new album from this group of metallic miscreants, but now the wonderfully named Mammoth Grinder are back with 29 minutes of destructive death dealing.
The music is hardcore-infused death metal, taking influence from the old-school, with some of the Swedish style being hungrily consumed in particular, (although this is not the only one).
Snippets of melody can be heard here and there as the band ply their macabre trade. The guitars have real bite, gnashing with jagged teeth as the drums smash skulls and the vocalist vomits death and fury over everything.
The songs are largely short and relentless, taking death metal’s pure atavistic intensity and injecting a certain old-school punk energy into it. The resulting mayhem is both enjoyable and satisfying.
It’s hard to dislike something like this. Mammoth Grinder exist entirely for the love of death metal, and Cosmic Crypt contains the type of music that any genre fan should lap up.
