Gridfailure – Ensuring the Bloodline Ends Here (Review)

GridfailureGridfailure is a one-man solo experimental project from the US.

This is a mutated, corrupted, experimental release that incorporates all manner of guitars, electronics, keyboards, noises, violins, bongos, harmonicas, and much, much more into its aborted embrace.

Okay, but is it any good? This is the Continue reading “Gridfailure – Ensuring the Bloodline Ends Here (Review)”

Eclipse – Clandestine Resurrection (Review)

EclipseThis is début album from Indian heavy metal band Eclipse.

This is melodic heavy metal played in the old-school style and backed up with bright keyboards that add some ostentation and punctuated highlights to the music’s already colourful charms.

The singer has a powerful and clear voice that soars above the music with character and passion. A good singing voice can make or break a band like this, and I’m pleased to say that there are no real issues in the vocal department. Continue reading “Eclipse – Clandestine Resurrection (Review)”

Devildriver – Trust No One (Review)

DevildriverThis is the seventh album from this US metal band.

I’ve always enjoyed Devildriver’s combination of modern metal, melodic death metal, thrash metal, NWOAHM, classic metal, nu-metal and crushing groove metal. Sure, they’ve had their ups and downs over the years with some albums being noticeably stronger than others, but they’ve always had enough meat on their metal bones to make me happy to listen to them in some capacity or other.

This moves us onto Continue reading “Devildriver – Trust No One (Review)”

Eggs of Gomorrh – Rot Prophet (Review)

Eggs of GomorrhEggs of Gomorrh are a Swiss Black Metal band. This is their début release.

Eggs of Gomorrh play Black Metal with a touch of Death Metal, especially in the vocals, which are as deep and cavernous as they come.

With an unrelentingly bleak sound, the Continue reading “Eggs of Gomorrh – Rot Prophet (Review)”

Overtures – Artifacts (Review)

OverturesOvertures are an Italian melodic Heavy Metal band and this is their fourth album.

Overtures play melodic Heavy Metal with nods to both progressive and Power Metal in their style. They know how to rock out when they need to, as well as exploring wider pastures and grander climes as appropriate.

This is an album strong in Continue reading “Overtures – Artifacts (Review)”

Black Royal – The Summoning Pt. 2 (Review)

Black RoyalThis is the second EP from Finnish Death/Sludge Metal band Black Royal.

Black Royal have an interesting style, effectively combining primitive 90s Death Metal with a Sludge/Stoner influence. It’s definitely the path less-travelled and makes for a very enjoyable journey.

The vocals consist of rough, Stoner-esque, semi-cleans, mixed in with deeper growls that have more of a Death Metal slant. Continue reading “Black Royal – The Summoning Pt. 2 (Review)”

Tothem – Gemini (Review)

TothemThis is the second album from Tothem, an Italian gothic/heavy metal band.

This is the band’s follow up to their début album Beyond the Sea, which was a polished collection of gothic metal tracks.

As with their first release; no matter how enticing the female vocals are, Tothem still remember that they’re first and foremost a metal band. This means that the music is just as important as the singing, and the guitars are present and correct as they should be.

Enoid – Exilé aux Confins des Tourments (Review)

EnoidThis is the seventh album from this Swiss black metal solo project.

As soon as I press play my attention is hooked by what blares out of the speakers. It’s scything, sharp Black Metal with a tight sound and enough frosted melodies and dark aggression to cut deep into the most jaded of hearts.

Kind of like Anaal Nathrakh crossed with Continue reading “Enoid – Exilé aux Confins des Tourments (Review)”

Sulphur – Omens of Doom (Review)

SulphurThis is the third album from Norwegian black metallers Sulphur.

Here we have an interesting release that combines a few different things into one. Omens of Doom is black metal that adds progressive, sometimes quirky, layers onto the razor-sharp modern style that it employs. Some elements of death metal and the avant-garde get a look in too, all incorporated into the comprehensive song structures.

Isolert – No Hope, No Light…Only Death (Review)

IsolertIsolert are a Greek Black Metal band and this is their début album.

Their previous demo, Isolated Soul, was one that I enjoyed, and the song Empty Memory (Hate for Mankind) has made it from that release onto this one.

The band play Scandinavian-styled Black Metal. Since their first demo they  Continue reading “Isolert – No Hope, No Light…Only Death (Review)”
