Rings of Saturn – Gidim (Review)

Rings of Saturn - GidimThis is the fifth album from Rings of Saturn, a technical deathcore band from the US.

This is synth-enhanced extraterrestrial deathcore, the likes of which is rarely encountered. We last caught up with Rings of Saturn on 2014’s Lugal Ki En, but it seems that time hasn’t slowed them down at all; quite the opposite in fact. Continue reading “Rings of Saturn – Gidim (Review)”

The Great Old Ones – Cosmicism (Review)

The Great Old Ones - CosmicismThe Great Old Ones are a black metal band from France and this is their fourth album.

Any fan of atmospheric/post-black metal would be advised to check out Tekeli-li, and EOD: A Tale of Dark Legacy. Both are great examples of quality blackened journeys crafted by a band that know their art well. On Cosmicism the band have spread their wings further, while also staying true to what makes them such an engaging act. Continue reading “The Great Old Ones – Cosmicism (Review)”

Coilguns – Watchwinders (Review)

Coilguns - WatchwindersCoilguns are a hardcore band from Switzerland and this is their third album.

It doesn’t seem that long ago since 2018’s Millennials burst onto the scene, and I suppose it wasn’t, really. However, already Coilguns, (boasting ex-members of The Ocean) are back with a new 41 minutes of unusual hardcore punk, (as well as some rather striking album art). Cleric – Serpent Psalms (Review)

Cleric - Serpent PsalmsThis is the second album from Cleric, a death metal band from the US.

It’s been quite a wait since 2013’s very tasty Gratum Inferno, and so, sucker that I am for this sort of thing, I was eagerly looking forward to this one. Continue reading “Cleric – Serpent Psalms (Review)”

Dawn Ray'd - Behold Sedition PlainsongThis is the second album from Dawn Ray’d, a black metal band from the UK.

Dawn Ray’d play classic, second wave-inspired black metal, with moments of folk interspersed here and there. Violin features prominently, and enhances the music in unobtrusive ways. Continue reading “Dawn Ray’d – Behold Sedition Plainsong (Review)”

Hour of Penance – Misotheism (Review)

Hour of Penance - MisotheismThis is the eighth album from Hour of Penance, an Italian death metal band.

The follow up to 2017’s enjoyable Cast the First Stone, Misotheism offers the listener 41 minutes of professional, merciless death metal. Blending brutality and technicality well, this new album is easy to listen to if you’re a fan of solid, classically-delivered death metal. Continue reading “Hour of Penance – Misotheism (Review)”

Fit for an Autopsy – The Sea of Tragic Beasts (Review)

Fit for an Autopsy - The Sea of Tragic BeastsFit for an Autopsy are a deathcore band from the US and this is their fifth album.

This album follows on from 2017’s hugely enjoyable The Great Collapse, which stood tall and proud as an example of deathcore that took influence from the original parameters of the genre, but had also progressed beyond it. The Sea of Tragic Beasts finds the band continuing down their chosen path, merging deathcore ferocity with post-deathcore progressive atmospherics and emotional content. Coffin Rot – A Monument to the Dead (Review)

Coffin Rot - A Monument to the DeadThis is the debut album from US death metallers Coffin Rot.

Coffin Rot’s self-titled demo from last year made an impression, so how could I pass up on the band’s first full-length? All four tracks from that demo have made it to A Monument for the Dead, with the 32-minute running time rounded out by a further four new tracks.
