Minenwerfer/1914 – Ich hatt einen Kameraden – Split (Review)

Minenwerfer 1914This is a split between black metallers Minenwerfer from the US and Ukrainian blackened death/doom band 1914.

First up we have Minenwerfer, with 21 minutes of fast and barbaric black metal.

Their side of the split contains four tracks; 3 originals and a re-recording of a song off their debut demo. Continue reading “Minenwerfer/1914 – Ich hatt einen Kameraden – Split (Review)”

Oniricide – Revenge of Souls (Review)

OniricideThis is the debut album of Italian symphonic metal band Oniricide.

Oniricide ostensibly play Nightwish-inspired symphonic metal, but there’s more than just this going on here. The music here has a nice, earthy feel to it that reminds me of some doom metal bands as much as symphonic/melodic ones.

The Nightwish influence is only a starting point, as Continue reading “Oniricide – Revenge of Souls (Review)”

Hryre – From Mortality to Infinity (Review)

HryreHyrye play atmospheric black metal and come from the UK. This is their debut album.

Featuring harsh black metal that’s born out of the early atmospheric style, it also has some progressive and folk influences that it welcomes into its wind-swept embrace.

Over 66 minutes the band paint dark pictures through extremity Continue reading “Hryre – From Mortality to Infinity (Review)”

Fractal Cypher – The Human Paradox (Review)

Fractal CypherThis is the debut album by Canadian progressive metal band Fractal Cypher.

I confess, I was drawn to this album by the cover artwork, which is the reason I decided to listen to it. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but in today’s digital age it’s worth noting that album artwork is still important, at least in my eyes.

So what of the music? Well, Fractal Cypher play modern progressive metal with ample keyboard enhancements and a Continue reading “Fractal Cypher – The Human Paradox (Review)”

Sisters of Suffocation – Brutal Queen (Review)

Sisters of SuffocationHailing from The Netherlands, this is the debut EP from this death metal band.

This is a timeless brand of death metal that has elements from several different eras in its makeup. The songs have a good degree of catchiness and hooks, and this is juxtaposed against the raw brutality that the band also bring to the melting pot of influences that they clearly have.

The singer has an absolutely brutal voice that’s all guttural Continue reading “Sisters of Suffocation – Brutal Queen (Review)”

Carnophage – Monument (Review)

CarnophageThis is the second album from Turkish death metal band Carnophage.

Sitting and writing this on a lazy Sunday morning, I’m listening to Monument again and it’s like a force of nature is rushing out of the speakers into my ears, engaging my brain and waking me up like it’s slapping me in the face over and over again.

Yeah, I still feel tired, but now I’m awake-tired. I’m sure you can relate. Continue reading “Carnophage – Monument (Review)”

Mindkult – Witch’s Oath (Review)

MindkultThis is the debut EP from Mindcult, a one-man doom metal band from the US.

This is fuzzy doom rock with an addictive edge that lures the listener in, seductively, with wily allure.

A large part of this is down to the singer’s voice, which Continue reading “Mindkult – Witch’s Oath (Review)”

Trap Them – Crown Feral (Review)

Trap ThemTrap Them are a hardcore band from the US. This is their fifth album.

Trap Them play dark hardcore, full of raw nastiness and rabid bite.

The singer has the perfect voice for this kind of thing; completely feral and utterly aggressive. His high-pitched screaming shouts lash out from the music like dangerous bladed weapons, eager to draw blood. With compelling rhythms and engaging, memorable vocal patterns, his voice is the driving factor and focal point for the dark music. Continue reading “Trap Them – Crown Feral (Review)”

Krylithsic – Beast of the Northern Hemisphere (Review)

KrylithsicThis is the latest EP from Krylithsic, a death metal band from Germany.

Krylithsic play fast and brutal death metal that unrelentingly pounds at your skin, looking to draw blood. The band also know their way around their instruments though, injecting technical aspects into the songs too. Continue reading “Krylithsic – Beast of the Northern Hemisphere (Review)”
