Descent – Order of Chaos (Review)

Descent - Order of ChaosDescent are an Australian death metal act and this is their second album.

Order of Chaos offers a tight 30 minutes of punishing death metal. Smashing together HM-2-influenced death metal with ferocious grindcore and caustic punk, Descent’s second album is a vicious beast. Continue reading “Descent – Order of Chaos (Review)”

Fit for an Autopsy – Oh What the Future Holds (Review)

Fit for an Autopsy - Oh What the Future HoldsFit for an Autopsy are a deathcore band from the US and this is their sixth album.

Both 2017’s The Great Collapse and 2019’s The Sea of Tragic Beasts demonstrated Fit for an Autopsy‘s superiority when it comes to deathcore. The band are just doing better things with the style than most other ostensibly similar bands out there. With that in mind, expectations were high for Oh What the Future Holds. Worm Shepherd – Ritual Hymns (Review)

Worm Shepherd - Ritual HymnsWorm Shepherd are a blackened deathcore band and this is their second album.

It’s been less than a year since 2021’s In the Wake of Sol, but here we are already with another Worm Shepherd album. Not that I’m complaining, as that album was a solid slab of blackened atmosphere and crushing deathcore heaviness. Continue reading “Worm Shepherd – Ritual Hymns (Review)”

Necrophagous - In Chaos AscendThis is the debut album from Necrophagous, a death metal band from Sweden.

Dakhma – Blessings of Amurdad (Review)

Dakhma - Blessings of AmurdadDakhma are a blackened death metal band from Switzerland and this is their second album.

Dakhma play an exotic form of blackened death metal that’s Zoroastrian-themed and highly detailed. Epic in scope and execution, Blessings of Amurdad offers a highly atmospheric exploration of extreme metal, without sacrificing the meaty, brutal riffs. The music is imbued with Middle Eastern influences that come to life not only Continue reading “Dakhma – Blessings of Amurdad (Review)”

Soul Remnants – Raising the Sacrificial Dagger (Review)

Soul Remnants - Raising the Sacrificial DaggerSoul Remnants are a death metal band from the US and this is their fourth album.

Following on from 2013’s Black and Blood and 2017’s Ouroboros, Soul Remnants have now returned with their longest album to date – 50 minutes of new material. If you’re unfamiliar with the band, a mix of old The Haunted and Hypocrisy, (with the occasional dash of Kataklysm and Amon Amarth), is a decent enough starting point to gain an initial idea of how their music roughly sounds, (although this is by no means a comprehensive description). Phenocryst – Explosions (Review)

Phenocryst - ExplosionsPhenocryst are a Portuguese death metal band and this is their debut EP.

This 23-minute EP erupts with the sort of underground death metal that impresses on first listen and then simply gets better on subsequent ones. Continue reading “Phenocryst – Explosions (Review)”

Charnel Altar – Abatement of the Sun (Review)

Charnel Altar - Abatement of the SunCharnel Altar are an Australian blackened death metal band and this is their debut album.

Charnel Altar’s 47-minute debut album reeks of horrific misery and grim nightmare. The music combines doom, death, and black metal into a hideously twisted mass of guitars, bass, and drums. It’s blackened death/doom of a sort, only not what that appellation might initially conjure; Abatement of the Sun is bred from far older and darker stock, with an old-school underground feel that’s as infectious as it is authentically nasty. Continue reading “Charnel Altar – Abatement of the Sun (Review)”

Phrenelith – Chimaera (Review)

Phrenelith - ChimaeraThis is the second album from Phrenelith, a death metal band from Denmark.

A monster named Phrenelith lurks deep in the death metal underworld, a malevolent entity that preys on any of the weak and unwary that get close enough to its sinister lair. With Chimaera the creature has ventured out of its territory once more and is hunting for fresh meat… Continue reading “Phrenelith – Chimaera (Review)”
