As it is every month, April’s releases were a hard bunch to whittle down to just a worthy few. I’ve settled on just the five below to highlight, but be aware that I’ve left out many other damn good records. Continue reading “Monthly Overview – the Best of April 2020”

Shatter Brain – Pitchfork Justice (Review)
This is the debut album from Shatter Brain, an Australian thrash metal band.
Featuring members of Voros and Alkira, Pitchfork Justice contains 40 minutes of bellicose metal. Blending thrash, hardcore, and sludge metal into a strong-tasting and satisfying concoction, this is a very impressive debut album. If you imagine Continue reading “Shatter Brain – Pitchfork Justice (Review)”
Hadopelagial – Hadopelagial (Review)
Hadopelagial are a German black metal band and this is their debut album.

Black Curse – Endless Wound (Review)
Black Curse are a US blackened death metal band and this is their debut album.
Black Curse contain members of bands such as Blood Incantation, Khemmis, Spectral Voice, and Primitive Man, (as well as many others), and Black Curse provides 38 minutes of poisonous extreme metal. Continue reading “Black Curse – Endless Wound (Review)”
Golden Light – Sacred Colour of the Source of Light (Review)
This is the debut album from Golden Light, a black metal band from the US.
Although a new project, featuring the artists behind bands such as Njiqahdda and Crown of Asteria, this is black metal delivered by people that know what they’re doing. Continue reading “Golden Light – Sacred Colour of the Source of Light (Review)”
Helfró – Helfró (Review)
Helfró are a black metal band from Iceland and this is their debut album.
Helfró originally briefly saw the light of day in 2018, but is now getting a fresh lease of life via Season of Mist. This appears to be the ‘proper’ release of the album, and it’s been well worth the wait it seems. This new version seems to have an extra song included this time around that opens up the album’s 37 minutes in great blackened style. Continue reading “Helfró – Helfró (Review)”
Ulcerate – Stare into Death and Be Still (Review)
This is the sixth album from New Zealand death metal act Ulcerate.
After 2016’s colossal Shrines of Paralysis, this exceptional band have now returned with a new 58 minutes of imposing material. If you’re unfamiliar with Ulcerate, then loosely stated they play an atmospheric brand of technical death metal. Continue reading “Ulcerate – Stare into Death and Be Still (Review)”
Forlesen – Hierophant Violent (Review)
Forlesen are from the US and play doom. This is their debut album.
There are only two lengthy tracks on this album, but with a total duration of 36 minutes, that matters not. The band members in Forlesen have a lot of experience with atypical music, as they play in a variety of bands such as Lotus Thief, Kayo Dot, Botanist, Maudlin of the Well, Nero Order, Palace of Worms, and Vesper Moth. Continue reading “Forlesen – Hierophant Violent (Review)”
Khôra – Timaeus (Review)
This is the debut album from Khôra, a black metal band.
Featuring a member of Dødheimsgard, and so many guests it’s quite remarkable, (mainly on vocals or keyboards, and from bands such as …And Oceans, Amiensus, Dødheimsgard, Finntroll, Nòtt, and Moonsorrow), a lot of talent and experience has gone into Timaeus. Continue reading “Khôra – Timaeus (Review)”
Oranssi Pazuzu – Mestarin Kynsi (Review)
This is the fifth album from Finland’s black metallers Oranssi Pazuzu.
This is the follow up to 2016’s well-received Värähtelijä, which is a record that has only increased in my estimation over time. Now, across 50 minutes of multifaceted and highly textured music, Mestarin Kynsi is an album that I have little doubt in my mind will keep on giving for years to come as well. Continue reading “Oranssi Pazuzu – Mestarin Kynsi (Review)”
