Dismal Landscapes of Voluptuous Pustular Cadaverosis offers up a feast of gruesome death metal brutality. Epicardiectomy are here to give you a big face full of SLAM, and they’re not interested in your cries for mercy. Across 37 minutes you’ll be horribly abused and violated, and you’ll love it. At least, you will if you’re a fan of brutal slamming death metal of the foulest sort.
The listener is blessed with access to eight imposing tracks of impenetrable ferocity and barbarity. Epicardiectomy have never sounded better. Dismal Landscapes of Voluptuous Pustular Cadaverosis is an absolute beast. Slam is a distinct subgenre of its own, and Epicardiectomy seem to have quite capably mastered it. Everything is well-judged, with all instruments and performances remaining on the right side of extreme, (for example, the snare drum sound doesn’t stray into comical waters at all, and the vocals don’t descend into ridiculous pignoise parody). Speaking of the latter, the vocals boast some of the most disgusting examples of inhuman growling you can imagine. Top work.
This is nasty, hideous stuff. Epicardiectomy ram their material straight into your unready face and force it into your skull. The casual brutality is sickening. Whether it’s lethal blast beats or sickening slam grooves, Epicardiectomy absolutely slay the opposition with their blunt force might. Armed with primitive-yet-destructive weaponry, the band go about their grisly work with murderous glee.
Dismal Landscapes of Voluptuous Pustular Cadaverosis is remarkably satisfying and enjoyable. It doesn’t try anything new with the slamming brutal death metal style, but it doesn’t need to. Instead, Epicardiectomy channel all of their gruesome powers into quality songwriting and execution. Put another way, Dismal Landscapes of Voluptuous Pustular Cadaverosis is an exemplar of the style, and is simply a better album than the vast majority of anything else you’ll hear that’s trying to do this sort of thing.
With new releases from Epicardiectomy and Ecchymosis so far in 2026, underground brutality is having a very strong year.
