Melvins – A Walk with Love and Death (Review)

MelvinsMelvins are a US sludge/metal/rock/doom band and this is their latest album.

A Walk with Love and Death is an album of two halves. The Death side is a ‘normal’ Melvins album, (whatever that means in the context of their ever-changing style), while the Love side is a film score to a short film that shares the same name as this album. Sun Q – Charms (Review)

Sun QSun Q are from Russia and play garage/alternative rock. This is their debut album.

This is a mix of garage, alternative, blues, and psychedelic rock. With keyboards, hammond organ, extra percussion, and a saxophone, this is an entertaining and characterful release that has a 70s lo-fi art-rock feel to it. Continue reading “Sun Q – Charms (Review)”

Slug Comparison – IIa (Review)

Slug ComparisonThis is the latest EP from Slug Comparison, a one-man Canadian progressive rock band.

Slug Comparison’s self-titled debut album, was a very enjoyable and well-realised 41 minutes of modern rock. It reminded me of a mix of elements of bands like Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Steven Wilson, and Sunna. Continue reading “Slug Comparison – IIa (Review)”

Feral/Debutante – Split (Review)

Feral DebutanteFeral are a drone/noise/post-rock band from the UK and Debutante is a one-man electro-rock/drone artist from Switzerland.

Tornado Kid – Hateful 10 (Review)

Tornado KidTornado Kid are a Russian metal band and this is their debut album.

Holy shitbastards this is good!

This is Southern-styled metal, with a bit of hard rock thrown in for good measure, as well as some hardcore influences. Sometimes when you think of a band who are described as Southern metal, you can think of tired clichés and generic delivery; there’s none of that here. Continue reading “Tornado Kid – Hateful 10 (Review)”

Ravens – Comfort Is a Slow Death/Freedom from Worry and the Fear (Review)

RavensRavens are a post-rock band from Ireland and this is their debut release.

This release contains two songs, has less than 9 minutes of music, and is instrumental in nature. It’s basically to whet the appetite. Continue reading “Ravens – Comfort Is a Slow Death/Freedom from Worry and the Fear (Review)”

Barrabus – Barrabus (Review)

BarrabusThis is the debut album from UK electro rockers Barrabus.

Barrabus play an individual style of enhanced rock that sees their delivery sit somewhere between that of Faith No More, Rabies Caste, Every Time I Die, and Dead Kennedys. It’s a somewhat eclectic mix that actually comes together in a highly cohesive manner across the album. Continue reading “Barrabus – Barrabus (Review)”

Avatarium – Hurricanes and Halos (Review)

AvatariumAvatarium are a doom rock band from Sweden and this is their third album.

Featuring current and ex members of bands such as Candlemass, The Doomsday Kingdom, Jupiter Society, Tiamat, and Evergrey, you know a lot of experience and talent is going to be present on this album before you even listen to it. Continue reading “Avatarium – Hurricanes and Halos (Review)”

The Night Flight Orchestra – Amber Galactic (Review)

The Night Flight OrchestraThe Night Flight Orchestra are a Swedish hard rock band and this is their third album.

Featuring members of Soilwork, Arch Enemy, and Witchery, (among many others), this is something of a different beast from these other bands, and presents us with 50 minutes of classic rock with some progressive overtones. Continue reading “The Night Flight Orchestra – Amber Galactic (Review)”
