This is a collaboration between Japanese multi-instrumentalist Keiji Haino and US post-metal band SUMAC.
SUMAC feature an impressive calibre of members, (Isis, Baptists, Russian Circles), so it’s a real shame I’ve never encountered any of their work previous to this. Keiji Haino I’m even more unfamiliar with, but it seems he has built up a significant body of work and collaborative projects over time. Vexes are a US modern/post-metal band and this is their debut album.
Although Deftones are the obvious starting point for comparative purposes, elements of The Unguided, Poison the Well, Glassjaw, and Cave In can also be heard in the band’s sound, as well as some more atypical moments in the style of, perhaps, Norma Jean, Between the Buried and Me, and Isis.
