This is the fifth album from Swedish sludge metallers Pyramido.
I’ve enjoyed watching Pyramido develop across 2013’s Saga and 2016’s Vatten, so it’s good to have 34 minutes of new material to enjoy on Fem.
This is the second album from US death metallers Sempiternal Dusk.
Following up on 2014’s enjoyable self titled debut record, Sempiternal Dusk’s new album contains 37 minutes of doom-infused death metal. It’s rotten and foul, just how we like it. Continue reading “Sempiternal Dusk – Cenotaph of Defectuous Creation (Review)”
This is the fifth album from Coffins, a death metal band from Japan.
I haven’t caught up with Coffins since 2015’s Craving to Eternal Slumber, but of course this highly prolific band have been busy since then on a number of releases. Beyond the Circular Demise is their latest full length, delivering 43 minutes of doom-infused death metal. Continue reading “Coffins – Beyond the Circular Demise (Review)”
Monolord are a doom metal band from Sweden and this is their fourth album.
Mixing doom, stoner, rock, and sludge into 47 minutes of satisfying Black Sabbath/Electric Wizard-esque worship, No Comfort is an enjoyable example of how to deliver a well-worn style with enough personality to be worthwhile. Continue reading “Monolord – No Comfort (Review)”
Cult of Luna are a Swedish post-metal band and this is their eighth album.
A Dawn to Fear follows on from the massively amazing Mariner, which was my album of the year for 2016, and deservedly so. Now, three years later, they return with 79 minutes of new material spread out over 8 songs. Continue reading “Cult of Luna – A Dawn to Fear (Review)”
This is the fourth album from Cloud Rat, a grindcore band from the US.
In my humble opinion Cloud Rat are one of the most forward-thinking, talented, and innovative grindcore bands out there, although simply labelling them grindcore is misleading and constricting, as their work frequently features so much more than your standard grindcore fare. Releases such as Qliphoth, and their various splits demonstrate this amply. Continue reading “Cloud Rat – Pollinator/Do Not Let Me Off the Cliff (Review)”
This is the third album from Nightfall, a US death/doom Metal band.
2014’s The Living Ever Mourn and 2015’s Darkness Evermore were both notable for their character and quality. Unlike the short gap between those two albums, however, we have had to wait considerably longer for A Sanity Deranged. I confess I have been looking forward to hearing this quite a lot. Continue reading “Nightfell – A Sanity Deranged (Review)”
August has provided many a metallic treat, and as you’ll see from the below selection, there’s been a decent amount of quality variety on offer this month too. So let’s get stuck in, as metal won’t listen to itself. Continue reading “Monthly Overview – the Best of August 2019”
This is the third album from US solo blackened doom band Mizmor, or מזמור.
Providing a lethal concoction of black metal, funeral doom, and drone across 57 minutes, this album is a harrowing and affecting journey into lost faith and existential crisis. It’s powerful, and an album that is clearly special upon even the first listen; repeated visits merely reinforce how exceptional it is. Continue reading “Mizmor (מזמור) – Cairn (Review)”
This is the third album from The Fifth Alliance, a doom/post-metal/sludge band from the Netherlands.
2015’s Death Poems impressed, but the band’s new album seems set to do even more than this. Continue reading “The Fifth Alliance – The Depth of the Darkness (Review)”
