Timeworn – Leave the Soul for Now (Review)
This is the third album from Timeworn, a Norwegian sludge metal band.
This is riff-friendly sludge metal, with both a hardcore influence and an atmospheric one. There’s a mix of the harsh and the beautiful here, which is weighted towards the energetic former, but the latter is still an important part of the band’s sound too. Continue reading “Timeworn – Leave the Soul for Now (Review)”

Cult of Luna – A Dawn to Fear (Review)
Cult of Luna are a Swedish post-metal band and this is their eighth album.
A Dawn to Fear follows on from the massively amazing Mariner, which was my album of the year for 2016, and deservedly so. Now, three years later, they return with 79 minutes of new material spread out over 8 songs. Continue reading “Cult of Luna – A Dawn to Fear (Review)”
Culted – Vespertina Synaxis: A Prayer for Union & Emptiness (Review)
Culted are an international blackened doom band and this is their latest EP.
I really enjoyed 2014’s Oblique to All Paths, and have been waiting for a new Culted release ever since. Well, now it’s here in the shape of this 27-minute EP. Boasting three tracks, Vespertina Synaxis: A Prayer for Union & Emptiness is a sinister exploration of Culted’s world. Continue reading “Culted – Vespertina Synaxis: A Prayer for Union & Emptiness (Review)”
This Gift Is a Curse – A Throne of Ash (Review)
This Gift Is a Curse are a blackened sludge band from Sweden and this is their third album.
Here we have 45 minutes of hateful extremity that combines black metal, sludge, and hardcore. It’s violent, world-ending music that’s wreathed in both aggression and atmosphere most foul. Continue reading “This Gift Is a Curse – A Throne of Ash (Review)”
John, the Void – III – Adversa (Review)
This is the second album from Italian post-metallers John, the Void.
After the band’s 2014 debut EP they jumped forward in style and quality with 2016’s II, and now they’re back with 48 minutes of new material for the listener to become absorbed in. Continue reading “John, the Void – III – Adversa (Review)”
Heaume Mortal – Solstices (Review)
This is the debut album from French post-black metal band Heaume Mortal, (featuring a member of Eibon and Cowards).
There are six tracks on this album spread out across a sprawling 58 minutes of material, (including a Burzum cover). This is music that’s dark and crushing, while also containing aspects of resplendence and writhing, textured colour. Continue reading “Heaume Mortal – Solstices (Review)”
