Dopethrone – Transcanadian Anger (Review)

DopethroneDopethrone are a Canadian sludge metal band and this is their fifth album.

Dopethrone have built up a very respectable discography over the years, and Transcanadian Anger is the latest in the long line of filth-covered fuzzed-up hateful distortion that the band peddle. Continue reading “Dopethrone – Transcanadian Anger (Review)”

Orange Goblin – The Wolf Bites Back (Review)

Orange GoblinThis is the ninth album from UK stoner metal band Orange Goblin.

It was 2014 when we saw the release of the first-rate Back from the Abyss. It seems like it’s been a long time since then, (and it has, I suppose), but now I’m very pleased to say that Orange Goblin are back with one of their strongest and most diverse albums to date. Continue reading “Orange Goblin – The Wolf Bites Back (Review)”

Graveyard – Peace (Review)

GraveyardGraveyard are a hard rock band from Sweden and this is their fifth album.

Even though this is the band’s fifth album, this is my first encounter with them. Featuring a very enjoyable classic version of hard rock, this is retro-styled and blues-infected, resulting in a soulful album of tunes and rocking anthems. The band’s multifaceted and rich songwriting shines strongly, and Peace provides a very satisfying and gratifying listen. Continue reading “Graveyard – Peace (Review)”

Eagle Twin – The Thundering Heard (Songs of Hoof and Horn) (Review)

Eagle TwinThis is the third album from US stoner/sludge/doom band Eagle Twin.

This is blues-inflected doom, taking a dirty stoner influence and spreading it far and wide with a low and heavy sludgy doom coating. Continue reading “Eagle Twin – The Thundering Heard (Songs of Hoof and Horn) (Review)”

Zud – A Wilderness Left Untamed (Review)

ZudZud are a US black metal band and this is their second album.

It’s been a long wait since the band’s 2013 debut album The Good, the Bad and the Damned, but we now finally have a new release from this very individualistic black metal band. Continue reading “Zud – A Wilderness Left Untamed (Review)”

Extinguish the Sun – Antihero (Review)

Extinguish the SunExtinguish the Sun are an alternative metal band from the US and this is their debut album.

Extinguish the Sun describe their music with reference to bands such as Mastodon, Clutch, Corrosion of Conformity, and Every Time I Die, and I have to say that sets the scene for their music pretty well. Continue reading “Extinguish the Sun – Antihero (Review)”

Diamond Head – Diamond Head (Review)

Diamond HeadDiamond Head are a metal band from the UK, this is their seventh album.

One of the original NWOBHM bands that formed way back in the late 70s, Diamond Head need little introduction to most people, although probably few have actually heard their music directly. Always poised for success, it has nevertheless  Continue reading “Diamond Head – Diamond Head (Review)”

Messa – Belfry (Review)

MessaThis is the début album from Messa, a doom/drone metal band from Italy.

Messa provide the listener with almost an hour of occult retro doom and dark ambience.

This is akin to a strange-yet-effective mix of Sunn O))) and Pentagram, with deliciously seductive female vocals included. Some tracks are dark ambient/drone, full of mysterious atmospheres and distorted malice, while others take Continue reading “Messa – Belfry (Review)”

Druids – Cycles of Mobeum (Review)

DruidsDruids are a doom/sludge metal band from the US and this is their latest album.

Druids take elements of modern bands like Mastodon and Behold! The Monolith and infuse them with an earlier style of doom and blues, as produced by bands like Earth and Black Sabbath.

There’s a quality level of musicianship on Cycles of Mobeum, and this Continue reading “Druids – Cycles of Mobeum (Review)”
