Ulvik – Cascades (Review)

Ulvik - CascadesUlvik are a Canadian black metal band and this is their second album.

Cascades contains 32 minutes of atmospheric black metal. What it might lack in quantity it makes up for in quality. Ulvik have produced an enjoyable, satisfying slice of darkness here. Theirs is a largely aggressive strain of atmoblack, but one that’s not without nuance or dynamic differentiation. Continue reading “Ulvik – Cascades (Review)”

Craven Idol – Forked Tongues (Review)

Craven Idol - Forked TonguesThis is the third album from UK black metallers Craven Idol.

It’s great to have some new material from Craven Idol. 2013’s Towards Eschaton and 2017’s The Shackles of Mammon were both records that I hugely enjoyed, and the 41 minutes of new material on Forked Tongues continues this trend nicely. Continue reading “Craven Idol – Forked Tongues (Review)”

Night Crowned – Hädanfärd (Review)

Night Crowned - HädanfärdThis is the second album from Swedish black metal band Night Crowned.

Featuring current and ex-members of bands such as Nightrage, The Unguided, Dark Funeral, and Imperium, Night Crowned play a melodic mix of black and death metal, (weighted towards the former), influenced by the 90s Scandinavian scene. Continue reading “Night Crowned – Hädanfärd (Review)”

Kold – Kold (Review)

Kold - KoldKold are a black metal band from Denmark and this is their debut release.

For some reason Kold is billed as an EP, despite having a duration of 39 minutes. Regardless of what it actually is, the music is really good, and that’s all that matters. Continue reading “Kold – Kold (Review)”

The Negative Bias – Tapeworm Pyramids (Review)

The Negative Bias - Tapeworm PyramidsThis is the latest EP from Austrian black metallers The Negative Bias.

Ever since first being exposed to The Negative Bias’s cosmic black metal on their split with Golden Dawn, I’ve been hungry for some more material from this band. As such, the 22 minutes on offer on Tapeworm Pyramids is very well-received. Continue reading “The Negative Bias – Tapeworm Pyramids (Review)”

Narbeleth - Svmma Cvm Nox ArcanaThis is the fifth album from Cuban black metallers Narbeleth.

I always enjoy catching up with new Narbeleth material. If you’re unfamiliar with the band, also make sure you check out 2014’s A Hatred Manifesto, 2015’s Through Blackness and Remote Places, and 2017’s Indomitvs. Continue reading “Narbeleth – Svmma Cvm Nox Arcana (Review)”

Ennoven – Empty Passes, Silent Trails (Review)

Ennoven - Empty Passes, Silent TrailsThis is the second album from Polish one-man post-black metal band Ennoven.

This is the follow up to 2014’s Redemption, which was a very enjoyable debut record. Empty Passes, Silent Trails, however, is on another level entirely. It contains only four tracks, but lasts 47 minutes, and spans a world of emotion and mood. Continue reading “Ennoven – Empty Passes, Silent Trails (Review)”
