November was a strong month for metal. Both death metal and doom are well-represented below, but as we’ll see more than just those two genres produced some great records in the past month. November saw a strong showcase for UK talent too, as five of the below bands are all from this country. Continue reading “Monthly Overview – the Best of November 2018”

Bast – Nanoångström (Review)
This is the second album from UK blackened sludge/doom band Bast.
This is a colossal, sprawling slab of doom that lasts 58 minutes and is divided into an intro track and five mammoth songs. Continue reading “Bast – Nanoångström (Review)”
Sadhus “The Smoking Community” – Big Fish (Review)
This is the second album from Sadhus “The Smoking Community”, a sludge metal band from Greece.
After enjoying their 2016 split with Agnes Vein, this is my first chance to get to grips with a Sadhus “The Smoking Community” full length album. Big Fish gives us 34 minutes of smoky heaviness and savage stoner doom sludge. Continue reading “Sadhus “The Smoking Community” – Big Fish (Review)”
Barbarian Hermit – Solitude and Savagery (Review)
This is the debut album from Barbarian Hermit, a stoner/sludge metal band from the UK.
With a thick, heavy sound, Barbarian Hermit explode out of the speakers with big riffs and a forceful presence. No messing around, no stupid intros, just straight into the good stuff. Just as I like it. Continue reading “Barbarian Hermit – Solitude and Savagery (Review)”
1914 – The Blind Leading the Blind (Review)
1914 are a Ukrainian blackened death/doom band and this is their second album.
I enjoy 1914’s work a lot, (check out Eschatology of War and their split with Minenwerfer, for example). With an appropriate concept for a band with this name, their latest creation is crushingly heavy and full of monolithic songs that devastate and destroy. Continue reading “1914 – The Blind Leading the Blind (Review)”
Unhold – Here Is the Blood (Review)
Unhold are a sludge/post-metal band from Switzerland and this is their fifth album.
2015’s Towering lived up to its name, and was a monolithic and notable record. I said that Towering offered Continue reading “Unhold – Here Is the Blood (Review)”
The Atrocity Exhibit – Extinction Solution (Review)
This is the third album from UK grinders The Atrocity Exhibit.
Just when you think you’ll never hear any more from this highly enjoyable grindcore wrecking crew, (their last release came out in 2013), we get a brand new album containing 19 tracks; 23 minutes of material to enjoy. Continue reading “The Atrocity Exhibit – Extinction Solution (Review)”
High on Fire – Electric Messiah (Review)
Un – Sentiment (Review)
Un are a doom band from the US. This is their second album.
This is the much-awaited follow up to 2015’s colossal The Tomb of All Things, which made it into my end of year list – in second place too, no less. Continue reading “Un – Sentiment (Review)”
Attan – End of (Review)
Attan are from Norway and play Hardcore/Post-Hardcore. This is their debut album.
To say that there has been a weight of expectation riding on this is an understatement, for me at least. Why? Because I absolutely love Attan’s 2015 debut EP From Nothing. After then seeing the band live at the following year’s Damnation Festival, and even Continue reading “Attan – End of (Review)”
