This is the debut album by UK doom band Dromos.
A 46-minute funeral doom album that consists of three mammoth songs? Yes please. Brought into the world by current/ex-members of Eihort, Final Dose, Mutagenic Host, and more, Dromos deliver a doom metal feast across the massive Failing Light.
Failing Light is heavily atmospheric. The music is colossal and bleak, yet benefits from an expressive heart and underlying psychedelic tendencies. This allows Dromos to create material that’s expansive and exploratory, while still being crushing and dark. In effect, it’s a mix of funeral doom and classic doom metal, with some additional psychedelic influences here and there. The vocals follow on from this, combining guttural growls, harsh screams, feeling-rich clean singing, and more.
Dromos’s music is slow and immersive. The songs gradually unfold into layered panoramas and textured vistas that tempt visitors to spend time in them, travelling widely. The record carries a hypnotic grace that’s easily absorbing. It balances well its heart of doom with a desire to roam self-crafted soundscapes built from evocative feeling.
Failing Light is a strong slab of well-rendered and rewarding funeral doom. From Bell Witch and Mournful Congregation to Pallbearer and Warning, picking up a few other bits and pieces along the way, Dromos spend their time very well across Failing Light dishing out high quality doom metal.
Very highly recommended.
