Lightless – A Foreseen Loss (Review)

Lightless – A Foreseen Loss (Review)

Lightless - A Foreseen LossThis is the debut album from German doom band Lightless.

A Foreseen Loss is a crushing 80-minute slab of blackened doom. Lightless play a gargantuan brand of doom mixed with serrated black metal and dark murderous sludge, (along with touches of post-metal and drone). Let me tell you, it doesn’t just hit the spot, but obliterates it. Continue reading “Lightless – A Foreseen Loss (Review)”

Heir – Terra Triumphans Jubila (Review)

Heir – Terra Triumphans Jubila (Review)

Heir - Terra Triumphans JubilaThis is the second album from French post-black metallers Heir.

It has been a loooong time since 2017’s Au Peuple de l’Abîme. In fact, I had no idea that Terra Triumphans Jubila even existed until I was kindly pointed in its direction. So Heir are back, with a new lineup since their debut, and have brought 60 minutes of new material with them. Continue reading “Heir – Terra Triumphans Jubila (Review)”

Idle Heirs – Life Is Violence (Review)

Idle Heirs - Life Is ViolenceThis is the debut album from US post-metal band Idle Heirs.

Featuring the singer of Coalesce, Life Is Violence brings us a 51-minute journey into absorbing post-metallic worldbuilding. It’s well-written, professionally executed, and passionately delivered. Continue reading “Idle Heirs – Life Is Violence (Review)”

Amenra – De Toorn/With Fang and Claw (Review)

Amenra – De Toorn/With Fang and Claw (Review)

Amenra - De ToornAmenra are a doom/post-metal band from Belgium and these are their latest couple of releases.

Notables Amenra are releasing two new EPs on the same day. Both are different in style and feel. Although I instinctually can’t help but feel a single release would have been better, the reality is that both offer something different, and I definitely have my preference out the two. Rwake – The Return of Magik (Review)

Rwake - The Return of MagikThis is the sixth album from US doom/sludge band Rwake.

The Return of Magik contains 54 minutes of a progressive and atmospheric mix of sludge, doom, and post-metal. With three guitarists, two vocalists, and the select use of a range of instruments and ideas, Rwake have created an impressive record. Continue reading “Rwake – The Return of Magik (Review)”

An Evening with Knives – End of Time (Review)

An Evening with Knives - End of TimeAn Evening with Knives are a stoner/post-metal band from the Netherlands, and this is their third album.

With an intriguing album cover and band name, and a promo blurb that saying it is for fans of Cult of Luna, Amenra, Neurosis, and Isis, I had to give End of Time a listen. Continue reading “An Evening with Knives – End of Time (Review)”

Nomadic Rituals – Fust (Review)

Nomadic Rituals – Fust (Review)

Nomadic Rituals - FustThis is the fourth album from Irish doom band Nomadic Rituals.

I really like Nomadic Rituals. Both 2017’s Marking the Day and 2021’s Tides were strong and charismatic takes on sludge/doom metal, with Marking the Day being especially good. So, it’s great to now have the 43-minute Fust appear. Continue reading “Nomadic Rituals – Fust (Review)”

Druma – Sores of Our Time (Review)

Druma – Sores of Our Time (Review)

Druma - Sores of Our TimeThis is the second album from German post-metallers Druma.

Sores of Our Time contains 36 minutes of music spread out over four songs. Druma’s style is a mix of sludge and post-metal, with dark atmosphere and a rich blackened touch. With a promo blurb that says it should be for fans of bands such as The Ocean, Cult of Luna, Amenra, and Gaerea, Sores of Our Time is an album that demanded I pay attention to it. Guiltless – Teeth to Sky (Review)

Guiltless – Teeth to Sky (Review)

Guiltless - Teeth to SkyThis is the debut album from US doom band Guiltless.

Following on from last year’s enjoyable debut EP Thorns, it’s time to see what Guiltless are capable of across a full length. Brought to us by current/ex-members of Intronaut, Generation of Vipers, Battle of Mice, A Storm of Light, IIVII, and Neurosis, the 43-minute Teeth to Sky is no disappointment. The Grey – Kodok (Review)

The Grey – Kodok (Review)

The Grey - KodokThis is the third album from UK post-metal band The Grey.

The Grey blend post-metal with stoner doom riffery and post-rock  grace. Kodok spends 42 minutes building a variety of sonic soundscapes that are immersive and absorbing. Stylistically, we’re in the territory of acts such as Pelican, Red Sparowes, Mountain Caller, Russian Circles, Bossk, and similar, at least as a rough starting point for Kodok.
