Apostle of Solitude – Until the Darkness Goes (Review)

Apostle of Solitude - Until the Darkness GoesThis is the fifth album from US doom metallers Apostle of Solitude.

Both 2014’s Of Woe and Wounds and 2018’s From Gold to Ash were very enjoyable records, so I knew I wanted in on Until the Darkness Goes‘ action. With a duration of 37 minutes it’s Apostle of Solitude’s shortest album yet, but what it lacks in quantity it makes up for in quality. Worm – Foreverglade (Review)

Worm - ForevergladeThis is the third album from Worm, a blackened death/doom band from the US.

Foreverglade is the fetid swamp where black metal, funeral doom, and death metal meet and all drown slowly. It hard not to get caught up in the band’s rotting stench. I mean, a blackened form of death/doom? One which knows how to craft atmosphere as well as crush with brutal harsh nastiness, all tied together with very effective songwriting? Sign me up. Right now. Indigo Raven – Looking for Transcendence (Review)

Indigo Raven - Looking for TranscendenceThis is the debut album from French doom metal band Indigo Raven.

Featuring a member of Mourir, Indigo Raven deliver 43 minutes of doom on Looking for Transcendence, (including bonus track, a Mazzy Star cover). The promo blurb states that the “trio’s sound emerges from the Peaceville Three’s influence with a modern sludge approach”, and this is a suitable description of what you’ll find on this album. To this I’d also add a certain 80s pop sensibility that makes for songs that stick in the head. Continue reading “Indigo Raven – Looking for Transcendence (Review)”

Megalith Levitation – Void Psalms (Review)

Megalith Levitation - Void PsalmsThis is the second album from Russian doom/stoner metal band Megalith Levitation.

2019’s Acid Doom Rites was a colossal trip into long-form doom, and it made enough of an impact so now that Void Psalms has surfaced, I feel ready once more to dive into the band’s evocative and rich world. Continue reading “Megalith Levitation – Void Psalms (Review)”

A Thousand Sufferings – Stilte (Review)

A Thousand Sufferings - StilteA Thousand Sufferings are a Belgian blackened doom band and this is their third album.

I’ve enjoyed seeing the development of A Thousand Sufferings over the years.  Starting with 2015’s sludgy Burden, and then on to 2018’s increasingly blackened Bleakness, the band made a good impression. It’s now 2021 and we have Stilte; the synthesis of black metal and doom has reached its logical conclusion, and the 41 minutes of material on this new album is the band’s richest and most engrossing so far. A Pale Horse Named Death – Infernum in Terra (Review)

A Pale Horse Named Death - Infernum in TerraThis is the fourth album from A Pale Horse Named Death, a Gothic/doom metal band from the US.

Featuring the ex-drummer of both Type O Negative and Life of Agony, we last caught up with A Pale Horse Named Death on 2019’s When the World Becomes Undone, which I enjoyed at the time, but ultimately didn’t live up to the promise of the band’s first two records. Infernum in Terra is here to rectify that. Continue reading “A Pale Horse Named Death – Infernum in Terra (Review)”

Ghostheart Nebula – Ascension (Review)

Ghostheart Nebula - AscensionThis is the debut album from Italian funeral doom band Ghostheart Nebula.

Ghostheart Nebula play a mixture of funeral doom and melodic doom metal, with added post-metal and post-rock flavour in places. Continue reading “Ghostheart Nebula – Ascension (Review)”
