Meshuggah – Immutable (Review)

Meshuggah - ImmutableMeshuggah are a legendary Swedish progressive/extreme metal band and this is their ninth album.

I really enjoyed Meshuggah’s last record, (2016’s The Violent Sleep of Reason), and it grew on me more and more over time. six years later the band have returned with a colossal 69-minute slab of their inimitable, (yet frequently badly imitated), djent-based progressive metal. Monthly Overview – the Best of October 2021

October was an absolutely stacked month for great albums! It was very hard to choose just a handful below. There were so many high quality releases and I know whatever I ended up choosing I’d miss some out that deserved to be highlighted, so I’ve just gone with whatever felt right in the moment – if  had to do this list again, I’m sure there would be some changes. Vildhjarta – Måsstaden Under Vatten (Review)

Vildhjarta - Måsstaden Under VattenVildhjarta are a Swedish progressive metal band and this is their second album.

Okay, buckle up and get comfortable, as this one’s a beast – there’s 80 minutes of material here, and it isn’t likely to appeal to those uninitiated in the ways of djent. Continue reading “Vildhjarta – Måsstaden Under Vatten (Review)”

Sentinels – Collapse by Design (Review)

Sentinels - Collapse by DesignThis is the debut album from US technical metal band Sentinels.

Collapse by Design features 47 minutes of contemporary heaviness. The band mix elements of metalcore, mathcore, progressive metal, djent, and technical metal, and do so really rather well. Alongside this they also play around with melodic and Continue reading “Sentinels – Collapse by Design (Review)”

Arcaeon – Cascadence (Review)

Arcaeon - CascadenceArcaeon are a technical/progressive metal band from the UK and this is their debut album.

Cascadence contains 49 minutes of modern metal that takes from the technical/progressive metal/metalcore and djent genres to craft an engaging, well-rounded album. The promo blurb recommends this for fans of bands such as Periphery, Monuments, Devin Townsend, Intervals, and Architects, and it’s hard to disagree. Continue reading “Arcaeon – Cascadence (Review)”

Alpha Wolf – A Quiet Place to Die (Review)

Alpha Wolf - A Quiet Place to DieAlpha Wolf are an Australian metalcore band and this is their second album.

Here we have a 36-minute chunk of modern heaviness. This is the heaviest of metalcore, so much so that it borders on deathcore in places. Mixed in with this are aspects of djent and nu-metal, as well as modern hardcore/metal elements in general. Continue reading “Alpha Wolf – A Quiet Place to Die (Review)”
