Wolf’s Hunger – Bež’te Živi, Vraćaju Se Mrtvi (Review)

Wolf's HungerWolf’s Hunger are a Serbian black/thrash metal band. This is their second album.

Despite there actually being a fair few bands out there that play blackened thrash metal in a convincing and enjoyable way, I still always think of myself as someone that’s not a huge fan of mixing the two. I think it’s Continue reading “Wolf’s Hunger – Bež’te Živi, Vraćaju Se Mrtvi (Review)”

Destruction/Flotsam and Jetsam/Enforcer/Nervosa – Manchester Club Academy, 06/10/16 (Live Review)

Destruction Flyer

How often do you get to see a thrash metal package like this? Not often, that’s for sure.

Nervosa

Nervosa Live

Having arrived in good time only to discover that the venue don’t have the guest list, I end up missing half of Nervosa’s set. Due to their latest album Agony being a firm recent favourite of mine, to say I’m disappointed is an understatement. Noctem – Haeresis (Review)

NoctemThis is the fourth album by this Spanish blackened death metal band.

It seems like their previous album, Exilium, was only released last year, but no; it was actually 2014. So here we are now, with another 46 minutes of their dark and malevolent brand of blackened death.

First off, let’s state the obvious – Haeresis is the sound of a confident and professional band at the height of their game. This is blatantly apparent from the start. Continue reading “Noctem – Haeresis (Review)”

Interview with Defiatory

Defiatory Logo

Defiatory are a thrash metal band from Sweden that have released a rather storming debut album called Extinct. Combining thrash’s classic sound with a more modern style, it’s a really strong first release, and one that I’ve been spinning rather more than I expected to. There’s something very catchy and more-ish about it, which is as it should be for any good metal album of this type. I took the opportunity to find out more about this new band…

Introduce us to Defiatory!

Defiatory is a band from Umeå, Sweden. Established in 2015. We started as a two piece band, recording demos for fun. But we got a lot of good reviews on our demo tracks and thought what the hell, lets make something out of this. And here we are!

What are your influences?

Early 90’s bay area thrash metal such as: Exodus, Metallica, Testament, Megadeth and the likes.

What inspires you about thrash metal?

Shodan – Protocol of Dying (Review)

ShodanThis is the début album by Shodan, a death metal band from Poland.

Shodan play modern death metal for the most part, but also incorporate a myriad of other influences and ideas into this atypical release.

The interesting thing about this band is how they develop their style for each song; it all revolves around a modern core of solid death metal, but each track uses this in its own way and incorporates different elements from Continue reading “Shodan – Protocol of Dying (Review)”

Archetype – Mission (Review)

ArchetypeThis is the debut album from Archetype, a Canadian progressive death metal band.

This is a progressive mixture of death and thrash metal that’s not short on confidence or character. Or, for that matter, a rather insane delivery style.

The songs have a decent mixture of aggressive thrash metal, (with a kind of German, Destruction/Kreator feel), and melodic death metal, (Carcass/Arsis), mixed in with more technical and progressive tendencies that see the band producing Continue reading “Archetype – Mission (Review)”

Azziard – Nirnaeth – Dramatis Personae – Split (Review)

Azziard NirnaethThis is a split between two French black metal bands.

Azziard are the first band to show what they can do, and they contribute a near-six minute long war-themed track named Unus Mundus.

Azziard play their black metal dark and evil, full of sharp riffs and even sharper melodies.

The singer rasps and screams his way alongside the relentless blast beats and heartless riffing, showing off his daemonic lungs with fiery abandon. Continue reading “Azziard – Nirnaeth – Dramatis Personae – Split (Review)”

Sonic Poison – Harsh Demonstration (Review)

Sonic PoisonSonic Poison are a Finnish grindcore band and this is their latest release.

Playing a primitive, old-school strain of grinding violence, this EP combines grind, crust, ugly thrash and Repulsion-worship into under 10 minutes of nasty carnage. There’s even a hint of Brutal Truth at their ugliest in some of the guitar riffs. Continue reading “Sonic Poison – Harsh Demonstration (Review)”

Hostis – Hostis (Review)

HostisHostis are a Serbian death/thrash metal band. This is their debut album.

Holy riff bonanza! This is thrash with a side order of death metal for good effect. Or the other way around, I suppose. Who cares when it shreds so hard that you’ll need bandages?

With a quality guitar sound, there are lots of good, energetic riffs on this release. Taking their cues from some of the old-school thrash greats, the guitars are one of the highlights of this release for me, fashioning soundscapes Continue reading “Hostis – Hostis (Review)”

Jinjer – King of Everything (Review)

JinjerJinjer are a metal band from the Ukraine, and this is their second album.

King of Everything mixes metalcore, hardcore, thrash metal, groove metal, melodic death metal and djent…Okay, that’s a lot of sub-genres. Let’s just say they cover a lot of bases.

That’s putting it too simply, though; in reality, Jinjer have managed to produce a complex and diverse album that has a whole lot more going on than you might expect for a band that’s labelled Continue reading “Jinjer – King of Everything (Review)”
