November was a strong month for metal. Both death metal and doom are well-represented below, but as we’ll see more than just those two genres produced some great records in the past month. November saw a strong showcase for UK talent too, as five of the below bands are all from this country. Continue reading “Monthly Overview – the Best of November 2018”

Master – Vindictive Miscreant (Review)
This is the fourteenth album from veteran US death metallers Master.
I really got on well with 2013’s The Witchhunt, so was pleased when this one appeared for my listening pleasure. Continue reading “Master – Vindictive Miscreant (Review)”
Dysmorphic – An Illusive Progress (Review)
Dysmorphic are a death metal band from France and this is their second album.
Dysmorphic play a mix of technical and brutal death metal, meaning that they fuse straightforward extremity with wandering basslines and intricate guitar complexity that probably requires more fingers than the average human possesses. Continue reading “Dysmorphic – An Illusive Progress (Review)”
Cryptopsy – The Book of Suffering – Tome II (Review)
This is the latest EP from Canadian death metallers Cryptopsy.
Wow, has it really been three years since The Book of Suffering – Tome I? Apparently so. Well, Book II is now here, gifting us with 18 minutes of brutality and mayhem. Continue reading “Cryptopsy – The Book of Suffering – Tome II (Review)”
Chapel of Disease – …And as We Have Seen the Storm, We Have Embraced the Eye (Review)
Chapel of Disease are a German death metal band and this is their third album.
2015’s The Mysterious Ways of Repetitive Art stood out for its dark individuality and bleak delivery. Here was a band that took the old-school death metal template and added an atmospheric, sometimes doom-laden twist to it. It was a very effective record. Continue reading “Chapel of Disease – …And as We Have Seen the Storm, We Have Embraced the Eye (Review)”
Corpsessed – Impetus of Death (Review)
This is the second album from Corpsessed, a Finnish death metal band.
It’s seems like a very long time since 2014’s Abysmal Thresholds was released on an unsuspecting world, so it’s great to finally have some new material unleashed from Corpsessed. Their debut remains a favourite of mine, so this new one – 48 minutes of material – is very well-received. Continue reading “Corpsessed – Impetus of Death (Review)”
Technical Damage – The Introspect (Review)
This is the debut album from Canadian modern progressive metal band Technical Damage.
This is modern metal that enjoys incorporating a few different styles and genres into itself. The core of the band falls somewhere between technical metal, djent, hardcore/metalcore, and modern death metal. This forms the bedrock of the band’s Continue reading “Technical Damage – The Introspect (Review)”
Ævangelist – Matricide in the Temple of Omega (Review)
This is the latest abomination from Ævangelist, a blackened atmospheric death metal monstrosity from the US/Finland.
Something is moving in the night. Something is writhing in the murk. It’s ugly, foul, and destined to cloud everything in a miasma of disgusting horror. Continue reading “Ævangelist – Matricide in the Temple of Omega (Review)”
1914 – The Blind Leading the Blind (Review)
1914 are a Ukrainian blackened death/doom band and this is their second album.
I enjoy 1914’s work a lot, (check out Eschatology of War and their split with Minenwerfer, for example). With an appropriate concept for a band with this name, their latest creation is crushingly heavy and full of monolithic songs that devastate and destroy. Continue reading “1914 – The Blind Leading the Blind (Review)”
Psycroptic – As the Kingdom Drowns (Review)
Psycroptic are an Australian technical death metal band and this is their seventh album.
I massively, hugely enjoyed 2015’s self-titled album, and the more I’ve got to know it over the years the more I’ve come to appreciate just how good of a record it is. Continue reading “Psycroptic – As the Kingdom Drowns (Review)”
