Miasmata – Subterrania (Review)

Miasmata - SubterraniaThis is the second album from New Zealand solo blackened heavy metal band Miasmata.

Subterrania brings us 39 minutes of material from the artist behind Miasmata. The style is a mix of black, speed, thrash, and heavy metal, and these six songs exemplify how to combine these elements into something cohesive and entertaining. Continue reading “Miasmata – Subterrania (Review)”

Wode – Uncrossing the Keys (Review)

Wode - Uncrossing the KeysThis is the fourth album from UK black/doom/heavy metal band Wode.

This is the follow up to 2021’s Burn in Many Mirrors, and a record I’m pleased to see appear. Uncrossing the Keys is not more of the same from Wode though. This should be expected, as each Wode album so far has found the band adding to their musical framework. Continue reading “Wode – Uncrossing the Keys (Review)”

Inconcessus Lux Lucis – Temples Colliding in Fire (Review)

Inconcessus Lux Lucis - Temples Colliding in FireThis is the third album from UK black metal band Inconcessus Lux Lucis.

Inconcessus Lux Lucis made a good impression on me with 2017’s The Crowning Quietus, and this was reinforced on 2021’s SamaeLilith: A Conjunction of the Fireborn split with Thy Darkened Shade, Amestigon, & Shaarimoth. The band have now returned with Temples Colliding in Fire, which delivers 44 minutes of new material. Continue reading “Inconcessus Lux Lucis – Temples Colliding in Fire (Review)”

SIG:AR:TYR – Citadel of Stars (Review)

SIG AR TYR - Citadel of StarsThis is the fifth album from Canadian black metal band SIG:AR:TYR.

The promo blurb tells us that Citadel of Stars is for fans of Bathory, Primordial, Falkenbach, Emperor, and Agalloch. This sets the scene nicely for what SIG:AR:TYR have to offer, and should also hopefully speak to how accomplished this album is too. Continue reading “SIG:AR:TYR – Citadel of Stars (Review)”

Morgul Blade – Heavy Metal Wraiths (Review)

Morgul Blade - Heavy Metal WraithsThis is the second album from US blackened heavy metal band Morgul Blade.

Now there’s an album cover for you. When combined with the title, it that speaks loudly of what you’ll encounter on Heavy Metal Wraiths. Across 36 minutes Morgul Blade deliver a rip-roaring trip through ten boisterous tracks that are designed to get those heads banging and fists pumping. Continue reading “Morgul Blade – Heavy Metal Wraiths (Review)”

Varathron – The Crimson Temple (Review)

Varathron - The Crimson TempleVarathron are a Greek black metal band and this is their seventh album.

I haven’t caught up with Varathron since 2014’s Untrodden Corridors of Hades, so reconnecting with them is long overdue. The Crimson Temple contains 49 minutes of new material, and it’s something quite something. Continue reading “Varathron – The Crimson Temple (Review)”

Havukruunu – Uinuos Syömein Sota (Review)

Havukruunu - Uinuos Syömein SotaThis is the third album from Havukruunu, a Finnish black metal band.

Uinuos Syömein Sota contains 47 minutes of black metal mixed with elements of heavy metal and folk. Viking/pagan/folk metal, or blackened heavy metal, or some such version of these words, are all appropriate tags, but Continue reading “Havukruunu – Uinuos Syömein Sota (Review)”

Rebel Wizard – Voluptuous Worship of Rapture and Response (Review)

Rebel WizardThis is the second album from Australian one man blackened heavy metal band Rebel Wizard.

I like Rebel Wizard, (see here and here). Mixing together a personable and charismatic blend of black, thrash, and heavy metal, Rebel Wizard’s music is harsh, underground, fuzzed out, and lethally effective. Continue reading “Rebel Wizard – Voluptuous Worship of Rapture and Response (Review)”

Rebel Wizard – Great Addictions to Blindingly Dark, Worldly Life (Review)

Rebel WizardRebel Wizard is a one-man blackened heavy metal band from Australia, and this is his latest EP.

I last heard Rebel Wizard’s work on his 2015 EP Invocation of the Miserable Ones, which stuck out with its well-written mix of black, thrash, and heavy metal. Continue reading “Rebel Wizard – Great Addictions to Blindingly Dark, Worldly Life (Review)”
