I like Rebel Wizard, (see here and here). Mixing together a personable and charismatic blend of black, thrash, and heavy metal, Rebel Wizard’s music is harsh, underground, fuzzed out, and lethally effective.
This album combines a ferocious metallic energy with a palpable sense of stylish melody and an obvious appreciation for a good riff. It’s infectious, moreish stuff, with some damn good solos.
The classic heavy metal of Rebel Wizard’s music is augmented by a distinct blackened sheen, as well as somewhat of a dirty punk feeling here and there. Atmospheric as well as direct, the music here is extremely enjoyable on many levels. The guitars are a highlight of these songs, but then the quality of both the songwriting and delivery is so high that everything here is pretty damn good.
The intense screams that make up the vocals are sharp and furious, unhinged and feral. Low in the mix, but never without presence, these are the type of needle-thin shrieks that I really like with anything blackened.
Production-wise it’s filthily underground, full of raw fuzz and evil, while also being quite professional and polished too. This could potentially sound like a contradiction, but in reality this isn’t the case. It’s raw and underground when compared to the more commercial side of modern music, but not when compared to some of the uglier, more obscure underground releases out there. Whatever, it works for Rebel Wizard’s sound very nicely.
Ultimately these songs are all about feeling, both in the emotive melodies and in the sometimes subtle, (and sometimes not so subtle), responses evoked in the mind of the listener. As you absorb the 44 minutes of material that’s given to us here you’re taken on a fantastical journey into foreign territories. These worlds are different for everyone, as Rebel Wizard’s music is designed to draw out individual responses and forge them into unique experiences. How will you respond to the glorious metallic glow of Voluptuous Worship of Rapture and Response? There’s only one way to find out…
