Blind Monarch – What Is Imposed Must Be Endured (Review)

Blind Monarch - What Is Imposed Must Be EnduredBlind Monarch are a UK doom band and this is their debut album.

Grim, foul, ugly, rotten, bleak, harsh…these and similar words can all be levelled at Blind Monarch’s colossal 56-minute debut album. Across four towering tracks the band embody all of these negatively charged words and more, all in the quest for the most despairing, hopeless doom they can find. Sloth Hammer – Superbia Ira Acedia (Review)

Sloth Hammer - Superbia Ira AcediaSloth Hammer are an experimental sludge/doom band from the UK. This is their second album.

No guitars, two vocalists, two electronicists, (is that a word?), two drummers, and plenty of bass, Sloth Hammer bring the pain on their second album across a colossal and punishing 78 minutes, recorded live and improvised. Continue reading “Sloth Hammer – Superbia Ira Acedia (Review)”

Illimitable Dolor – Leaden Light (Review)

Illimitable Dolor - Leaden LightIllimitable Dolor are from Australia, and play atmospheric death/doom metal.

Following on from their split with Promethean Misery, I was keen to hear more from Illimitable Dolor. Well, now is that opportunity; Leaden Light contains 52 minutes of material, carved into five exquisite slices. Continue reading “Illimitable Dolor – Leaden Light (Review)”

Onirophagus – Endarkenment (Illumination Through Putrefaction) (Review)

Onirophagus - Endarkenment (Illumination Through Putrefaction)Onirophagus are a Spanish death/doom metal band and this is their second album.

The phrase ‘crushing doom’ was made for a band like Onirophagus. Well, ‘crushing death/doom’ is more accurate I suppose, but it probably doesn’t matter too much. The operative word here is ‘crushing’. Continue reading “Onirophagus – Endarkenment (Illumination Through Putrefaction) (Review)”

Body Void – You Will Know the Fear You Forced upon Us (Review)

Body Void - You Will Know the Fear You Forced upon UsBody Void are a doom band from the US and this is their latest EP.

After last year’s colossal I Live Inside a Burning Building I wasn’t expecting to hear anything new from Body Void for a while, but I’m very pleased to be mistaken. Continue reading “Body Void – You Will Know the Fear You Forced upon Us (Review)”

Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard – Yn Ol I Annwn (Review)

Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard - Yn Ol I AnnwnThis is the third album from the impressively named Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard, a doom metal band from the UK.

I really enjoyed the band’s striking 2016 debut record Y Proffwyd Dwyll, which saw the band offer up an intoxicating blend of psychedelic sludge/doom metal. In 2018 they unleashed a mammoth, (ahem), split with Slomatics called Totems, which Continue reading “Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard – Yn Ol I Annwn (Review)”

Eremit – Carrier of Weight (Review)

Eremit - Carrier of WeightEremit are a doom/sludge band from Germany and this is their debut album.

As I’m sure many reviews will point out, Carrier of Weight is aptly named, as this is an album of substantial heaviness, both in the sense of sheer heaviosity and weighty atmosphere. Either way, it crushes. With only three tracks, but a total playing time of 68 minutes, Carrier of Weight is a monster of atmospheric heaviness. Continue reading “Eremit – Carrier of Weight (Review)”
