Telepathy – Transmissions (Review)

Telepathy – Transmissions (Review)

Telepathy - TransmissionsThis is the fourth album from UK post-metal band Telepathy.

What do we have here then? The promo blurb Pelagic Records recommends Telepathy for fans of Tool, Deftones, Russian Circles, and The Ocean, which, coupled with the fact that it’s on the ever-interesting Pelagic Records, meant I couldn’t pass this by without checking it out. Let’s get stuck in then. Continue reading “Telepathy – Transmissions (Review)”

Wren – Black Rain Falls (Review)

Wren – Black Rain Falls (Review)

Wren - Black Rain FallsWren are a UK sludge/post-metal band and this is their third album.

I was introduced to Wren on their 2015 split with Irk, and I’ve been a fan ever since. They followed that with the enjoyable EP Host in 2016, and then by their debut full length, (and particular favourite of mine), Auburn Rule in 2017. Groundswells followed in 2020, and continued their string of quality releases. Which brings us up to date with the 36-minute Black Rain Falls. Continue reading “Wren – Black Rain Falls (Review)”

Pothamus – Abur (Review)

Pothamus – Abur (Review)

Pothamus - AburThis is the second album from Belgian post-metal/sludge band Pothamus.

Following on from 2020’s enjoyable Raya, Pothamus have returned with 47 minutes of new material in the shape of Abur. The band have taken their past work and made it even more atmospheric and nuanced, treating us to an evocative blend of post-metal, post-rock, and drone. Continue reading “Pothamus – Abur (Review)”

Grief Ritual – Collapse (Review)

Grief Ritual – Collapse (Review)

Grief Ritual - CollapseGrief Ritual are hardcore band from the UK and this is their debut album.

Collapse features 40 minutes of raging hybrid hardcore. It’s fierce, unforgiving, and colossally heavy. Grief Ritual are here to punish the listener, so prepare yourself for a pummelling. Continue reading “Grief Ritual – Collapse (Review)”

Beneath a Steel Sky – Cleave (Review)

Beneath a Steel Sky - CleaveThis is the debut album from Scottish post-metal/rock band Beneath a Steel Sky.

The promo blurb recommends the 40-minute Cleave for fans of bands such as Isis, Cult of Luna, Russian Circles, Cave In, and Mogwai, which should give you a good starting point for Beneath a Steel Sky’s material. This is good stuff, and worth your attention. Continue reading “Beneath a Steel Sky – Cleave (Review)”

Obscure Sphinx – Emovere (Review)

Obscure Sphinx – Emovere (Review)

Obscure Sphinx - EmovereObscure Sphinx are a post-metal band from Poland. This is their latest release.

Oh my, new Obscure Sphinx! We last heard from this exemplary band on 2016’s Epitaphs, which narrowly missed out from breaching the top three in that year’s end of year list. So rejoice, as we now have Emovere to salivate over hungrily. Continue reading “Obscure Sphinx – Emovere (Review)”

Atra Vetosus – Undying Splendour (Review)

Atra Vetosus - Undying SplendourAtra Vetosus are an Australian black metal band and this is their third album.

I always enjoy catching up with Atra Vetosus. Periodically they emerge from wherever it is they slumber, unleashing quality black metal as they do so. If you haven’t heard them before, make sure you check out 2018’s Apricity and 2021’s Even the Dawn No Longer Brings Hope, alongside this new record, of course. Especially this new one, actually, as we’ll see. Continue reading “Atra Vetosus – Undying Splendour (Review)”

Wonderbox Metal End of Year List – Best Metal of 2024

Wonderbox Metal End of Year List – Best Metal of 2024

Yes, it’s list season once more, so gather round and witness some of the best metal that 2024 had to offer!

2024 was a fantastic year for metal, and that’s an understatement. I thought 2023 was one of the weaker years for metal releases, overall. As such, putting last year’s list together, although challenging as it always is, was relatively effortless compared to this one. I don’t think I’ve agonised over placings more any other year. In the end, similar to last year, I just decided that enough was enough and I needed to just stop needlessly obsessing. Continue reading “Wonderbox Metal End of Year List – Best Metal of 2024”

Pillar of Light – Caldera (Review)

Pillar of Light – Caldera (Review)

Pillar of Light - CalderaThis is the debut album from US post-metal band Pillar of Light.

Caldera contains 56 minutes of hulking heaviness and shaded darkness. Pillar of Light blend doom, sludge, and post-metal elements into a churning pot and use these choice ingredients to produce something weighty and thick, yet surprisingly tasty. Múr – Múr (Review)

Múr – Múr (Review)

Múr - MúrThis is the debut album from Icelandic progressive/post-metal band Múr.

Across 54 minutes Múr have crafted a multifaceted record that takes liberally from the progressive and post-metal styles, resulting in a journey that’s very satisfying. Múr should appeal to fans of bands such as Ihsahn, Gojira, Alcest, Devin Townsend, Iotunn, Opeth, The Ocean, and Enslaved, as it touches all of these bands and more in different places over the course of the album. Importantly though, Múr never sound like they’re plagiarising, and instead have managed to forge a personality of their own remarkably quickly. Continue reading “Múr – Múr (Review)”
