Aviana – Epicenter (Review)

Aviana - EpicenterThis is the second album from Aviana, a metalcore band from Sweden.

Aviana play modern metalcore that’s mixed with elements of 90s nu-metal and a slight contemporary progressive/djent edge. They play on the heavier end of the metalcore spectrum, and although there’s clean singing included, it’s still with a focus on heaviness overall. Continue reading “Aviana – Epicenter (Review)”

Unprocessed – Artificial Void (Review)

Unprocessed - Artificial VoidUnprocessed are a German progressive metal band and this is their third album.

Artificial Void contains 58 minutes of technical wizardry and complex structures and fuses them into a modern progressive metal journey that’s a rather impressive achievement. Not the least of this is because the album takes a vibrant, fresh approach to what could easily be tired and stale in another band’s lesser hands, (and frequently is). All We’ve Known – Dissidence (Review)

All We've Known - DissidenceAll We’ve Known are a South African metalcore band and this is their debut album.

All We’ve Known’s chosen style of music is modern metalcore, mixed in with some electronic elements. The typical structure is that of heavy verses with harsh, shouted vocals, combined with a more melodic, emotive chorus with clean singing. Yes, it’s a Continue reading “All We’ve Known – Dissidence (Review)”

Whitechapel – The Valley (Review)

Whitechapel - The ValleyThis is the seventh album from US deathcore veterans Whitechapel.

Following on from Our Endless War and Mark of the Blade, Whitechapel are back with another thundering album of deathcore, modern metal, and pit-rousing brutal anthems. So how have they got on this time? Continue reading “Whitechapel – The Valley (Review)”

Any Given Day – Overpower (Review)

Any Given Day - OverpowerAny Given Day are a German modern metal band and this is their third album.

I confess that I’m usually quite hesitant to listen to bands like this, (modern metal/metalcore), as a lot of the time I’m simply confronted with heartless aggression and plastic emotion. Not so with Any Given Day. On Overpower, you can tell they mean it. Continue reading “Any Given Day – Overpower (Review)”

Holding Absence – Holding Absence (Review)

Holding Absence - Holding AbsenceThis is the debut album from Holding Absence, a UK modern metal band.

I had no intention of writing about this album. Described as a metalcore album themed around love, it did not push my buttons, I confess. However, I made the mistake of actually listening to the band, and ended up being firmly hooked. Continue reading “Holding Absence – Holding Absence (Review)”

Windrunner – Mai (Review)

Windrunner - MaiWindrunner are a Vietnamese metalcore band and this is their debut album.

Billed as a progressive metalcore band, this means that on Mai we get 43 minutes of heavy stop-start belligerence mixed with elements of modern progressive metal spread out over 11 tracks. The end result is music that mixes aggression and emotion well to achieve a balanced style of modern heaviness. Continue reading “Windrunner – Mai (Review)”

The Agony Scene – Tormentor (Review)

The Agony SceneThe Agony Scene are a US metal band and this is their fourth album.

Tormentor is the first release from The Agony Scene since 2007’s Get Damned. I always liked this band’s razor-sharp take on modern metal, so it’s great to hear them make a return. Continue reading “The Agony Scene – Tormentor (Review)”
